I adore Russian names, and would like to give my future children Russian names, but I am not Russian, and my future chilren's father probably wont be either. Would you think it was bizarre if you met someone with a clearly Russian name who was not Russian?

Names I like:

Vassili
Konstantin
Levrenti
Yuri
Illarion
Vissarion
Nikolai
Gavriil

Galina

(If you can't tell, Im not that into girl's names in general.)

I don't think it's a bad thing, but they're probably going to be asked if they're Russian a lot.

I love the name Nikolai!

Go for it! I met a Mikhail and I'm not sure whether he was Russian or not, but I didn't care enough to ask. It's a good name and it suited him.

I'm having the same dilemma! I LOVE Russian names, and Russian lit, and basically everything Russian.

I think they're a little too obviously Russian for use by someone who isn't Russian. Names like Anastasia or Aleksandr would translate better. However, if I saw someone whose name was Yuri McCarthy or Levrenti Jensen, I'd be like, WTF.

I love a lot of Russian names as well... and I'm not Russian, and I don't except my kids' father to be Russian either, so I totally feel your issue (I also have the same problem with Spanish, except the likelihood of a Spanish husband is possible, if not probable). I think that as long as it's a name that is spellable and decently easy to pronounce correctly, then it's not a big deal if you're not Russian.

From your list, I love Vassili & Konstantin.
I went to the IIHF World Juniors tournament this year, and took a major liking to Nikita, Maxim and Vitali (a few names of the players on the Russian team). I love Anton and Evgeniy (which is my fish's name), too.

I guess if it was a Russian variation of a typical name (eg Nicholas becomes Nikolai) then it wouldn't be too bizarre. I do like Dimitri, though...

However, Levrenti, Yuri, Vassili... they'd have to be relatively Russian to withstand those names I think =D

hahaha, I'm half Russian. So I can get away with Russian names. Jealous? ;)

To be honest, I think it's a little strange, but only for a second.
I personally adore Finnish names. I really would like to name babies Finnish names, but I doubt they will be Finnish babies.

YES! I have some Russian blood in me, but my family has been American for like 6 generations, I don't think I can get away with any ethnic names at all :(. The closest I have on my list is using the nn Katia for Katherine.

I think you can get away with some Russian names even if the last name isn't Russian. The comedian Demetri Martin comes to mind.

My husband's the same way! He loves Finnish names and has no qualms about giving them to our future children, even though our last name is...French.

Your husband has excellent taste!
And you have excellent taste for choosing someone with excellent taste!

Please name your babies Finnish names.

I think that Dimitri and Yuri are the least likely to cause the 'are you Russian?' questions.

For girl names (since you have only one), I'd recommend checking out the gymnastics and skating competitions. You'll find lots of pretty Russian names.

Ooh, what are your favorite Finnish names? I'm Finnish and I've never seen any Finnish names here so I find it interesting. A lot of Finnish names are a bit tricky to pronounce especially in English speaking countries though :/ My last name is always pronounced in a way that sounds so so wrong in Finnish lol...

I don't think it's too bad if you use a bit more normal names, like Nikolai or Konstantin but Vassili (though I like it a lot!) and Levrenti and such could be a bit weird. I love Russian names, too. My favorites are Aleksei, Ivan and Ilja (though this name has only one letter difference to my name...) but I'm Finnish so I think I could pull off at least Aleksei :>)

I really am starting to become annoyed at the "Oh, I hate this movie/person/blah-blah", and that name is pretty much tarnished.

I just don't get it. All that matters is that you like it!
