In the novel I am currently reading, one of the semi-main characters has the name St. John. Not Saint John, coz one character was noted for saying it wrong when she said that. But St. John. As a first name. Well, I've never heard him called Mr. St. John (surname), just St. John (surname), so it might be a title. But then again who in books is called Mr.??
Well anyway, how would one pronouce this? Unless it is Saint John. Or ...'Snt' as an abreviated form, which is how it's been in my head.
But..... WHAT? Why does a character have this name, I have never heard of it!!
Any thoughts?
EDIT: Seems its unanimously agreed that it's Sin-jin then, thanks all!
No, I am not reading Jayne Eyre, I am reading a modern novel by Wendy Holden called Filthy Rich. (It's about both money and allotments.) St. John is the character who is Chairman of the Parish Council, and President of the Allotments Association. For ages and perhaps for obvious reasons I kept getting him mixed up with the vicar, but it turns out they are two separate blokes. Which would make sense, if St. John is a name in it's own right!
Thanks everyone!
