[identity profile] lipsty.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My 18-year-old cousin is having a little girl in a few months and for some unexplained reason, I've got it into my head that she's calling her Tinkerbell, which is obviously insane. I have no idea what she's actually planning to call her.

Anyway, I'm lucky that there are a lot of girls in my family because I have loads of girl names ideas for when I have children and only one boy name.

Girls:
Kaliadne (nn Kali)
Harlequin (nn Harley or Quinn)
Bethlehem (nn Beth)
Aurora (nn Rory - and I'm British, so nothing to do with the Gilmore Girls)
Eve
Elspeth (nn Elsie)

Boy:
Willoughby Jonathan (nn Will)

What do you mean you're lucky you have lots of girls in your family? The sex is determined by sperm, and isn't hereditary at all.

Kaliadne (nn Kali)
Horribly made up. What about Ariadne? It's actually a real name..

Harlequin (nn Harley or Quinn)
noun.
Harlequin A conventional buffoon of the commedia dell'arte, traditionally presented in a mask and parti-colored tights.
A clown; a buffoon.

Alternatively, google 'harlequin baby'.

Still think it's a good name?

Bethlehem (nn Beth)
Way too religious. Rather weird. You could get Beth from Elspeth or Elisabeth?

Aurora nn Rory
Rory was a Lorelai, anyway I'm English and rather obsessed with Gilmore Girls!
I do love Aurora, but Rory is my favourite name, for a boy.. so it bothers me to see it being taken over to the girls.

Eve
I find Eve far too short and abrupt. I do love Eva though, but prefer the nn Evie to plain Eve.

Elspeth (nn Elsie)
Not a favourite of mine, but I see the attraction and would love to see it on someone elses child- especially over your top three.

Boy:
Willoughby Jonathan (nn Will)
Rather over the top, in a private school elitist kind of way.

I took the 'lucky to have a lot girls' because if there were a lot of boys, it would be more likely for her one name to be taken whereas she has plenty if someone uses one of her girl names [I obviously could be mistaken on this].

Agree with you on the names though (particularly Rory as a boys name...). My favorite of the names would probably have to Eve and Jonathan (spelled wonderfully ;)].

Ahh, okay that makes sense!
I didn't like to call someone out for being so stupid!

Kaliadne is actually a real name from Greek mythology:

http://www.theoi.com/Nymphe/NympheKaliadne.html

I suppose it's one of the more obscure mythology names, so it looks made up indeed...but I kind of like the sound of it.

I also love Eve, by the way.

Aurora, Eve and Jonathan are all fine names, and I like them all. The rest (particularly Harlequin) are not so good, imo.

hmm, okay. Ariadne is also a greek mythological name, so this makes sense. it says the latin translatoin is Caliadne, which is prefer by miles.

I like Aurora and Eve. I theoretically love Willoughby, despite the bad Austen association, but you have to admit it's an elitist private school name. Just like Barnaby.

Interesting choices.

I like:
Kaliadne
Aurora
Eve
Willoughby - I like it because I named my chinchilla this (spelled Willowby). We thought he was female when we named him Willow...so we just added the "by."

Overall, good picks.

Of these, I really like Aurora and Eve. I like Beth a lot too but prefer Bethany or Elizabeth.

I used to like Harlequin too, but as [livejournal.com profile] anapology pointed out saying "google 'harlequin baby'", seeing those poor babies ruined it as a name for me, not to mention scared the hell out of me as a pregnant woman... On top of that, and the clown definition, Harlequin is in the name of a major publisher of trashy romance novels. I still like Harley though.

Harlequin? That's really not a good name. No offense, but "harlequin baby" is a particularly grotesque congenital defect, and the meanings of Harlequin are pretty negative. Plus it makes me think of bad romance novels. The only positive association I have with Harlequin is the Batman character, who is actually named Harley Quinn (it's a joke; she dresses like a harlequin).

Why not just pick either Harley or Quinn?

I like Kaliadne, Aurora, and Eve. I like Jonathan but not Willoughby.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw Harlequin, honestly. I think Harley Quinn is pretty awesome.
