Hey guys. My sister found out she's having a girl! I was just wondering what you all thought of the name Malia? It's the Hawaiian form of Mary. I dont like the name at all but it's my sister's kid, so whatever.

Edit 4/28/06 @ 921am: Thanks for all your input and congrats!! I appreicate it alot :)

I generally don't like my sister's choices either, and she's trying to get pregnant. But to me, it really bothers me. Lol I think Ill get her a baby name book and highlight my choices. ;-)

I don't like Malia either, lol.

It really, really depends on what other names she plans to put with it. I can see it being either a really pretty/unique spin on a common name, or... well... not working at all.

I know a few Malias. I think it's a pretty name.

I'm assuming it's pronounced Muh-LEE-uh. I have a cousin named Malya, but it's pronounced Mahl-yah. I live both pronounciations.

I think it's pretty enough. I agree with the above comment stating it depends on the name she chooses to combine it with, though.

I love the name, its one of my best friend's middle names (she's hawaiian) but she spells it Melia.

I would have guessed it to be pronounced MAH-lee-uh to rhyme with Tahlia... which I also think sounds nicer than other ways you could pronounce it. It's not the worst name in the world really, it does sound like a name, just a bit unusual. Definitely sounds feminine anyway.

I actually meant her last name (and should have said that in the first place, sorry). I'm also a little biased about middle names because I really like mine, and I like the way my whole name fits together (first + middle + last).

I like it pronounced Ma-LEE-a, but not MAHL-ee-a. How is she planning to pronounce it?

Congrats to the family :)

Malia is a nice name, though not something I'd use.
Perhaps it'll grow on you once your niece is here (if your sister does use the name)

How is it pronounced? Mal-ee-uh? Or Muh-lie-uh? I like the second :)

Oh, I see from the above comments its neither of those. lol. I like how she is pronouncing it, though :) I just don't like Mal-ee-uh... but I'm not sure why I thought people would say it like that in the first place!

When I worked at the daycare there was a baby in my class named Malia. She was adorable and I think the name grows on you over time :)
