I've been thinking about the name Genevieve lately. I can see the name being adorable on a small child (nicknamed Evie or Gennie), and appropriate for an adult. But is it too much? I like the name and it's really been growing on me, but when I say I've been thinking about it to other people they kind of look at me like "Really??"

So, be honest about the name Genevieve. What do you think of it? How would you feel if you met a baby with the name?

My name is a variation of that.. Geneveigh. I think it's somewhat elegant and works throughout my life. I used to hate my name, but I've grown to really love it. My parents nicknamed me Genni, which I still go by but with a J now.

So to answer your question, I would feel okay if I met a baby with the name Genevieve, with or without a nickname. It's pretty.

pronounced gen-uh-veve or gen-vi-ev?
i've heard it both ways and i really prefer the first pronounciation.
I like the name a lot.

I like the French version of the name much better: Geneviève, pronounced zhan-vee-ev.

It's nms, but it's a perfectly fine name, if you like it, use it! It's not too out there. A little frilly some might find it but so what?

I don't like it. For some reason, it reminds me of an elderly Belgian lady.

Apart from that, it's a fine name, I think. Sort of classic looking/sounding, but uncommon.

I don't like this name at all. It's mostly because of someone I knew with this name, and I didn't like her, but I also don't like the anglicized pronunciations (either Jenn-uh-veev or Jenn-vee-ev). If anything, I prefer the French (Zhan-vee-ev), but I still don't like it as a name.

I think it's very pretty and like you said, it would age well. :)

I really like it, but I am not planning on using it. Still, I think it's a beautiful name and it ages well, with good nicknames if you want to use any.

I love it. I don't know if I would use it as a first name, but it is one that I would definitely consider for a middle name for a future daughter.

I think it's a very pretty name that works well with any age. I like the nickname Evie best.

It's not. I think there's also an air of class and sophistication to the name as well, and that helps counterbalance, so it can still be a name taken seriously.

I love it. It's beautiful, no matter what age.

All the Genevieves I know are called "Gen" and sometimes I just assumed their name is Jennifer unless I find out otherwise

I love this name, but it's my fiancee's grandma's name and she's not someone we'd want to honor...ugh.

But -otherwise- I think it's a gorgeous name.

My name is Jennifer, but my mother used to call me Genevieve as a nickname. I've always liked the name- it's also the name of my great-grandmother.

A friend of mine is named Genevieve -- she's been Jenny most of her life. It works well on her. She's 23 now, but I've known her since she was 11 and it's never really been an issue for her.

I think Genevieve is such a pretty name. It was my great-great grandmother's name. I also have a neighbor with the name. She's around 21. She goes by Viva, which I think is pretty cool.

Sound-wise, I think Gennie fine, but I don't like the spelling. I always think it's Genie at first glance. I would say Genny, but I don't really like the look of that either. I like Ginny, but you lose the 'e' that is actually in the name. Evie is adorable. The name has a lot of nickname possibilities so I think there should be no worry about ever using it.

I hate it. I never liked it before, but now I associate it with somebody that I don't like, and it's even worse. It's a whole lotta name. Bit too much name. I don't like the way it looks, and I like about one pronunciation of it.

I like it. I have the same thoughts about Dewey. I think it would be cute on a kid, and it is a family name. But it doesn't seem like it would grow up well, lol. Yours would much better.

I knew a jen-uh-veev in primary school. hated her. she was your typical cinderella character. pretty. quiet. kind. everybody loved her. makes me think of Mary-Sues, fanfiction-style. ugh.

I love it, but I prefer the French pronunciation.

Either pronunciation, I would think it was adorable if I met a baby with the name. It is a very feminine, romantic name to me though, so I'd be inclined to treat her like a little lady.. I know that's a worry for some parents. I'm envisioning a little blond or red-haired smiling infant swathed in lots of white with lace. :)

I might still use it. ;) It goes really well with our other name we have picked out (so good for a sibling), but I worry I'd be correcting people's pronunciation all the time, and also a friend of ours is dating a Genevieve and we don't want that to be weird. Also, every other Genevieve I've ever met goes by 'Jen', which I would not be happy about. :(

I adore it; it's one of my top names for girls right now. But I love frilly names, so I'd never tell you it was too much. ;) I would use Evey as a nickname, like the comic book character.

Geneviève is fine as long as it's pronounced as it should (Juh-nuh-v-yeh-v, French J)
I absolutely cannot stand Gen-VEEV or any other anglophone butcherings of the name.

i like it and think it's cute, but i much prefer the french pronunciation. i can't imagine anyone using it in america though because it would just get pronounced like the americanized version all the time.

I totally agree with you. I think it's a fine name, it's just not a name I personally would use because it's not my style. However, I'd much rather use Genevieve than, say, Jaydyn.

I have friends who named their kid this. There was a general reaction of OMG pretentious and I felt the same way, like the parents were trying way too hard. It's too frilly unless you're French.

I think it is a lovely name. It's not one heard to often and thats what I like about it. my brother had a a girl friend named Genevieve and she went by Genna for short. But it truly matters what you think...it's your child! ;)

It's not a bad name by any means, it's just that I'm not really too fond of it. My reason, though, is because of a woman I knew with the name - she's the mother of my ex friend who was a complete you-know-what, so ... my opinion on the name is tainted. Obviously, you don't have that association, so .. if you like it, use it, I say! :)
