I like the name Kirsten a lot and am considering using it as a first name someday. Problem is, I only like it pronounced Kursten. I'm pretty sure it's acceptable to be pronounced both ways, but I'm just wondering how you all pronounce it.

I know Kirsten Dunst pronounces it Keersten. I don't know any IRL though (not that she's not real haha).

I pronounce Kirsten like Kursten and Kiersten like Keersten. WDYT? If I named my daughter Kirsten, do you think I'd have to correct people all the time?

Probably. You could use Kersten.

I'm the opposite. Where I live it's always pronounced Kursten and I hate that and like Keersten! If I wanted to have a Keersten I'd have to spell it Kiersten.

I personally pronounce Kirsten as Kursten. It reminds me of the name Kirsty, which I would pronounce with the Kur sound too.

It could be that I am from Australia, i noticed that someone else mentioned it is pronounced like that here.

i pronounce kirsten like kursten. if i wanted a name to be pronounced keersten, i would spell it keirsten/kiersten.

i imagine you may have to correct people, but if you like it, stick with it.

heck, i grew up with the name carrie and even i had to explain to people every now and then how to pronounce it. if people are dumb enough, youll have to explain jane to them, yknow, theres no avoiding it.

I've always liked Kirsten. And I definitely say it Kursten, because for some reason Keersten annoys the hell out of me! As does Kristen. I know they are different names, but still, both bug me. That said, I imagine you will always need to be correcting people on how to pronounce it correctly, but that seems to be happening with just about every name worthwile nowadays. Don't let it stop you. ;)

I pronounce it 'Keersten'.

Then again...I'm Dutch. So yeah ;)

Probably just because of Kirsten Dunst, I say Keersten. I've never seen the name Kiersten before, it looks very masculine. I would say you'd probably have to correct people a lot.

I pronounce it Kursten but I think you would have to correct a lot of people unfortunately :-/
Then again, my brother named his daughter Keirsten (Keersten) because he pronounces Kirsten as Kursten as well so maybe you wouldn't have to correct people *shrug*

For years, any time I saw that name, my instinct was to say "KUR-sten." But now that I personally know a Kirsten and she pronounces it "KEER-sten," that's the pronunciation I assume when I see the name written. I like it either way, but I think, thanks in part to Kirsten Dunst, you'd have to correct people a lot if you wished for them to say "KUR-sten."

My sister's best friend is named Kirstin, pronounced 'KUR-stin', and I've never heard anyone ever try to call her 'KEER-sten'.

I agree with you on KIR-sten. Can't stand the KEER sound.
