What do you all think of the name Lucian?

I came across it today and have fallen in love with it. Do you think it's a bit too close to "Lucy"/"Lucia", though?

It depends, do you have a daughter named Lucy or Lucia? If not, then I don't see what the problem is. I like the name Lucian (I pronounce it loo-shin), I think it's a good, solid name.

I dislike Luciano (Loo-CHAH-no in italian) and all variations.
The only one I except from this is Lucien (Loose-YAN) in french.

I'm not sure if you're pronouncing Lucian as LOOSE-yan or LOO-shan, but Lucia is definitely pronounced Loo-CHEE-ah in italian and Loo-SEE-ah in spanish.

I like it, pronounced Loo-sea-un ... it's actually the only one of these names that I like (I don't like Luke, Lucas, Lucy, etc.). I guess I kind of like Lucia too, but not Loo-sha (I like it Loo-see-uh).

Ooops, I forgot to add ... I like it spelled better as Lucien than Lucian, but they're both good.

Lucien makes me think of the main character in Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza series, and that makes me happy :)

I don't like it at all. It just sounds so dark. I could see it working really well in a sibset with Dante. Vampires and Hell, that's what comes to mind.

I like it! It's on my list! I'd pronounce it "Loo-sea-in" and have "Luc" as a nn.

I really like it using the "see" pronunciation, which is what you said you like.

I do have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] laminy though. It will sound a bit dark to some. Ironic really, as it means light. I believe the negative ideas surrounding it go back to Lucifer. Same Luc=light prefix. Also, Lucius Malfoy. :P My first impulse hearing it is dark, but when I step past the associations, it is a really nice name.

i LOVE Lucian! I babysat a little boy from England whose name was Lucian. I live by the beach and love beachy names... I plan to name my future daughter Cora!

I think it's noly too close if you've already got a kid named Lucy. Otherwise, a nice name. ;)

I prefer Loo-see-en as well.

i think it's okay. i think it'd be really weird if there were siblings with the names lucian and lucy or lucian and lucia. they're just way too similar IMO.

I've always loved that name. It is close to Lucy/Lucia because they come from the same name (the Latin Lucius) and therefore have the same meaning (light), but I don't think anyone would think Lucy when they heard Lucian. (I've always pronounced it LOO-shan.)

No; I say "Lucia" as "loo-see-ah" and "Lucien" as "loo-shen". But some people say Lucia as "loo-sha" so, in that case, it may be a little too similar, yeah.

We have a Lucien in the family, pron. lou-SHEN. I didn't like it at first but it's grown on me enough to at least be tolerable. Assuming you are prononcing it the same, I like your spelling better.

I like Lucian for a boy, and I think Luci would be a cute nick name. But I grew up with a friend, Luciano nn Luci, so maybe that's why I don't see Luci as strictly a girls' name.
