Apr. 11th, 2006 04:26 pmSo this girl I know is having a baby, and she's naming it Alyvya, like olivia, only spelled wrong. I feel so sorry for the kid, she's going to be spelling it all the time. danngg.
I know this other girl who's naming her baby Wryleigh. Come onnn. If you are going to name your kid something that resembles a normal name, just spell it right. Geeze.

Date: 2006-04-11 01:50 pm (UTC)Alyvya...? That just looks dumb... really dumb.
Wryleigh...? That's utterly painful! It doesn't even look good! It's like a giant mix of ugly letters!

Date: 2006-04-11 02:39 pm (UTC)I have a cousin named Alyvia and I think it's cute, but not my style at all. I'm not a big fan of lots of "yyyyy" in names. Too cutesy for me.

Date: 2006-04-11 03:03 pm (UTC)Honestly what is the logic behind this whole trend?
'Creative' spellings do not make a name more special or whatever the hell kind of effect people are going for; because guess what, it's the same freaking name.
People will spell it the standard way, you will have to correct them (very tedious and annoying), they will think you're idiots who couldn't spell in the first place, the child will be embarassed, etc.
Am speaking from experience here. My parents, in their dubious wisdom, gave me a very common* name but with a really unusual spelling variant. Still have no idea quite why.
It is very frustrating and embarasing having to deal with that. For many years I didn't even know how it was spelt (because I didn't use it much so didn't get to practise). Now don't get me wrong it's a nice name, but I don't like it enough to put up with such agro.
Fortunatley that was my middle name, and they refrained from repeating the process with my brother.
In conclusion if you want a common name then use the common spelling that it comes with. If you want to be creative or whatever then go all out and use something that isn't common/trendy/whatever.
*relative to the decade and country I was born into.
