I had those "Amelia Bedelia" books as a child, they were about this weird maid who put a turkey in clothes and all this other stupid stuff. So I can't think of this name without thinking of that and I really really don't like it.
Yes it's a real name. It's a variation of Beatrice. It's not that weird. It's not like I am asking what do you think of Tennis Racket for a boy's name?
I've never heard of this book that's been mentioned. My first thought was "isn't there an actress named Bonnie Bedelia?" When delia is part of the name Cordelia, I don't mind it so much, as long as the nick name was Cordy. But then I equate my acceptance of Cordelia with nn Cordy, to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The "Be" part of Bedelia bugs me because it's like the sounding out sound used when teaching kids how to say words that start with the letter b. =/
not crazy about Bedelia- my grandma's name was Delia (she passed) and I wanted to name a daughter after her- my husband HATES the name- so no Delia's for us- I think it's cute though

Date: 2008-10-10 02:00 am (UTC)Bedelia is an actual name.
The Amelia part is an homage to the books of my childhood. That wacky Amelia Bedelia!
