I was a really big fan of the band Hanson, and was interested to find that all the males of their family go by their middle.

Parents
Clarke Walker Hanson - Goes by Walker
Diana Frances Hanson - Goes by Diana

Children
Clarke Isaac Hanson - Goes by Isaac/Ike
Jordan Taylor Hanson - Goes by Taylor/Tay
Zachary Walker Hanson - Goes by Zachary/Zac
Jessica Grace Hanson - Goes by Jessica/Jessie/Jess
Avery Laurel Hanson - Goes by Avery/Avie
Joshua Mackenzie Hanson - Goes by Mackenzie/Mackie/Mac
Zoe Genevive Hanson - Goes by Zoe

Taylor is married with 2 children
Jordan Ezra Hanson - Goes by Ezra
Penelope Anne Hanson - (Apparently) Goes by Ellie (apparently not by Penny, as Hanson's latest radio release was "Penny & Me")

Okay, so now you think I am really stalkerish, knowing all their families names etc. (being a fan for 10 years does that to you) however what I want to know is what do you think of this? and do you have any idea why a family would use a tradition like this? I guess I've always been interested.

I went to school with two guys, who went by their middle names because their parents wanted to name the boys after their two grandfathers, but liked different names (which were their middle names and the ones they went by). I guess it was the happy medium. Does that kind of make sense? :)

Taylor has two kids? o_o

Where have I been? Heh.

I do love the parents choices of names for some of them - Zoe Genevive sounds really great.

I'm at a loss to understand why the males of the family use that tradition and not the females.

i would guess that it started by a great great grandfather (or maybe even farther) that went by his middle name and the family just chose to repeat it. but what do i know. ;)

i have a few relatives that go by their middle names... my great grandfather was hilary emmett but went by emmett, because hilary was too feminine. i have a cousin named olivia anne who goes by anne or "annie", they liked the combination olivia anne but wanted her to go by anne. another cousin is eric stephen and he goes by stephen or "stevie" because his father's name is eric and they thought it would be too confusing to have two eric's. my grandfather is andrew frank, but he went by frank (not sure why). so that's not really as intentional as the hanson family, but it just gives some background into another family doing that.

one of my fave boy names is elliot laurence. i adore the combination, but i would want him to go by laurence or "laurie".

so yeah... no point really to my comment except to say that i would bet a man in the hanson family went by his middle name and they just chose to repeat it... maybe it even started with walker. i dunno. :)

not all of them...

My fiance's family does that.
Grandfather- Howard Thomas and goes by Tommy
Grandmother- Nola Fern and went by Fern

Mom- Patricia Diane and goes by Diane
Uncle- Howard Dale and goes by Dale

When my fiance started school they asked him which name he wanted to go by. Up unti then they called him by his full name, Darrell Matthew. He picked Darrell and broke the pattern. His younger sister later decided to go by her first name as well. Her name is Melinda Josephine. Most people call her Mindy but some call her Mindy Jo.

My parents did this. My brother was named James Eric, after his bio dad. I guess they called him Eric, so no confusion. Or my mom called him that cause he was an evil guy? My other brother is Andrew Christian... my mom loved the name christian, but thought andrew christian sound better than the reverse. For the first three weeks of my life, I went by Paige, but she thought Katharine Paige flowed best. Then she decided she liked the whole thing, so I got a double name.

We're just weirdos though.

that's tiny me! I told you we are weird.

I only plan on torturing one of mine with a double name. but its a lot simpler than katharine-paige.

I went to school with a brother and sister who were named after their parents! They both went by their middle names, which is good because seriously, their parents had some horrible names!

lol

the first one was born in the eeeearly 1900's, and then it was just a family name passed down, so yeah, it doesn't fit now.

I don't get it. If you like a name, and plan to call your child by that name, why not give them that name?

If any of my children choose to be known by their middle name then I suppose it's up to them, but I wouldn't call my child John William (for example) if I intended for him to be known as William.

I grew up in a small village in Wales, and it was quite common for the locals to go by their middles names. My grandfather was Welsh, and his four sisters all went by their middle names (or nicknames of their middle names.. eg Meg instead of Margaret, and Lel instead of Eleri!) I don't know where the tradition comes from though, unfortunately.

I think the idea is that you're naming them after someone to honor that person, but then you don't want too many people being called by the same name, so you call them by their middle name.

or, you're cheesy like my grandparents and name your kid Mary Christine because she was born on christmas eve, but call her Chrissy because that's the name you like better :)

anyway, I don't get it either. we're just using family names as middle names.

i am one of the ones that goes by their middle.
lili bianca but i go by bianca.

my parents liked both names, but liked bianca better, but thought bianca lili sounded bad.
so i am lili bianca and go by bianca.

sort of annoying, but you get used to it.

I love Hanson (and no my icon isn't related to Zac) but I think it's retarded how most of them go by their middle names. I think its stupid when parents name their child FIRSTNAME MIDDLENAME and say "OH SHE WILL BE GOING BY MIDDLENAME" like... just name them the damn name you're going to call them. It's stupid.

I HATE the name Penelope. It's not my style at all and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It also makes me feel very, very old to know Taylor has 2 kids. I remember when he was a skinny fourteen year old! I'm a retired Hanson fan. lol

I do love the name Ezra, it's very pretty and considered it for my son. I'd like Jordan if it wasn't so popular.

My son has the same binkie as Ezra, haha. Where did the red hair come from?
