I have a very close family member that has a slight speech impediment. People hardly notice until he points it out to them that he can not make the 'th' sound properly and he can not hear the difference between the 'th' sound and the 'f' sound (He says three and free, for example, sound identical to him). I hardly gave this a second thought until it came up in a recently family gathering (his mother still tries to correct it, the man is in his mid-twenties so it's pretty much there to stay) and we discussed names and attempted a few 'th' names to see how they sounded - I can hardly hear a difference when he says names like Theron, Theodor, Thaddeus, Ethan, but his mother, who I am not so close to, says he's 'f' rather than 'th' (so Feron rather than Theron) and now I debate whether I should leave 'th' names out of my name lists entirely for his sake and the sake of peace in the family.

He has no problems with it (He quite liked Theron, actually) so I sway back and forth. I just worry that 'those in the know' will point it out repeatedly at him and the child-to-be and cause problems/negative feelings/ awkwardness/ etc.

So, I'm not sure, what would you do?

I don't think it'll cause much of a problem to be perfectly honest. If it doesn't bother him then it shouldn't bother anyone else.

I quite like Theron too actually.

I would take it into consideration while looking at names... but I wouldn't totally rule those names out.

If it doesn't bother him, don't worry about it. Especially if he liked some of the names you tried out.

I have a speech impediment, I have a hard time with S sounds and TH sounds, and my oldest child is named Lucas, some days, I trip right over it and it sounds horrible other days it's just fine. He doesn't seem to care that I have trouble with his name, and neither do I.

If he has no issue with it, than you should have no issue with it, AND you should take up the NON issue with the CORRECTORS in the family.

Like with a baseball bat.

Not that I'm feeling violent or anything...

if he's not embarrassed by it, then no one else should be. it obviously doesn't seem to bother him that much..i'd stick with the th names. :]

Personally, I would steer away from names that would cause conflict to fall on him by others. While it's great that he doesn't mind the names you like with the 'th' sound in it, I doubt he likes people constantly correcting him. There's literally thousands of names to choose from, I would opt for choosing a name I like that will also prevent, or at the least, minimize family drama.

I just had to step in to say that it doesn't matter how old he is, which a quality speech therapist he can significantly help that.
