My spouse and I are btoh of Irish/Gaelic decent, and wanted our son to have an authentic Irish name. We chose: Killian Braeden Wrigley. And it's a sure thing, but...

What do you all think?

I love it. Though I prefer the Cillian spelling (to me, Killian looks really feminine for some reason), Killian is definitely less likely to be mispronounced.

I've always loved Killian. I think it goes well with your last name.

If I ever get pregnant again, and it's a boy... I'm going to name him Killian Jude. :-)

Sorry, I'm the voice of dissent. I can't stand the name Killian, probably influenced greatly by the fact that it's the name of a beer. Yes, it's a legitimate name, but the fact that it's a beer is something I can't get out of my head.

I also don't like Braeden because it just looks like a creative-spelling-version of Braden/Brayden/etc. I realize it's a Gaelic spelling, but to the uninitiated, it may not appear that way.

And Wrigley's a gum. And a field.

Great name. I love Gaelic names!

Good choice

May I remind you that you asked for opinions?

I honestly wasn't trying to be disrespectful, and didn't realize that Wrigley was your last name. Last names aren't often posted here, but it's not uncommon to see two middle names discussed for a child. And, because it was a community post, I didn't pay particular attention to your user name. If I had, I probably would've made the connection.

Associating "Killian" with a beer doesn't make me closed-minded, so thanks for the insinuation. I'm Irish, with a cousin named Killian, and the association remains.

Love that spelling of Braeden compared to others. It looks much less harsh to me. Nice name overall.

I'm not a fan: I think "kill" when I read "Killian," and Braeden will be constantly misspelled and reminds me of that awful "rhymes-with-Aidan" trend.

I would spell it Cillian. If you want to be 'authentic', that's the original way of spelling it. Plus, I don't like that Killian starts with 'Kill'. It just makes the name look... not good. Also, Braeden doesn't look 'authentically Irish', so much as 'trendy American'.

I agree about the Killian-I wouldn't name my kid after a beer personally.
And if you're so set on the name, it shouldn't matter what other people's opinions are. If you just wanted compliments on your super awesome name-well, most people in this community are honest til it hurts, so expect some criticism.

I dislike Killian for reasons already mentioned. Beer, has "kill" in it, etc. If you're looking for alternatives or having second thoughts (you say you're not, but you've come for opinions, so it's possible), this list (http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/iri_m.php) might prove useful. I've always quite liked Eamon, Tiernan, and Seamus, for example. But Killian's not BAD, I don't think — just not optimal out of all the millions of names in the world.

And my dislike of all things über-trendy, like Jayden and Braeden, is well-established, so I'll just say that I'm glad it's the middle and not the first name.

Well, if we're going to get all technical about it, Braeden (http://www.behindthename.com/name/braeden) comes from Braden (http://www.behindthename.com/name/braden), which comes from Ó Bradáin.

So "Braeden" may LOOK more Gaelic (and that's definitely the most popular spelling in the States, so I'd go with it to avoid confusion), the spelling variation came later, kinda the way that Megan came first and then people tried to make it look more Gaelic by turning it into Meghann, etc.

I don't think Cillian spelled this way would be mispronounced. That being said I love the name Cillian and tried to talk the hubby into it with our first son. It was a no go.

I love it. Like a few others, I prefer the Cillian spelling, but I totally understand where you're coming from with not wanting it to be mispronounced all the time. Although, the actor Cillian Murphy spells it with a C, so maybe some people will have a bit of familiarity with the name based on that?

And, for what it's worth, I still really like the name Braeden (and the spelling), but I would avoid it at all costs as a first name because of the Braeden A., B., & C. issue that the kid's bound to face in school. But as a middle name, I think it's great! Plus... Who cares if a middle name is really common? Think of how many boys' middle names are Michael... Nobody rips on them.

I like the name but if you want it to be an authentic Irish name, you should spell it Cillian because there actually is no letter K in the Irish language. I know this because I'm Irish and have lived in Ireland my entire life and we have to learn to speak the language, it's compulsory at all levels of schooling. So while i like the name, i just thought i'd tell you about K not existing in Irish and give you a perspective from Ireland. So to sum up... Killian isn't an authentic Irish name for that reason so if you want it to be, spell it Cillian. Nice name though :)

Braeden is a more popular spelling in the States than Braden? I'm not arguing, because I really don't know, but I've never met/seen a Braeden... I've seen a number of Bradens.

Ah, well, either way, good point on the spelling derivatives.

I really like the name Cillian, but with a K, it just looks wrong to me. But anyway, I like the name because of how it sounds. Braeden, I didn't realize was Irish, but that's the only aidan/ayden/etc name that I only ever liked and that spelling. So I like the name.

Perhaps the association is helped along by the fact that Killians is an irsh beer? :)

I agree, beer was the first thing I thought of.

The most popular spelling is actually 'Brayden', then 'Braden', and then 'Braeden'.

I don't mind the first name. Cillian may be the original spelling, but Killian is the accepted anglicised version, so it's not like you made it up or anything. also, my son Dietrich has the word DIE in his name, and I still used it. granted it's pronounced "dee" but whatever.

Braeden, regardless of any history behind it, is going to be associated first and foremost with the '-ayden' trend by the vast majority of people. I'd avoid it for that reason, personally, but at least it's just the middle name.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it -- whether established current users by SSA statistics (Braden the clear winner), total established use for all ages (Google pinning Brayden to the winner's board by miles), projected use (all of which have separate sources)... I'm trying to find which source named Braeden as 2008 projected use winner -- but failing! I may have misread...? Of course now I'll spend the next several days feverishly tracing my steps, 'cause I'm a research-a-holic.

I'm not a fan of Killian either. Don't know anything about the beer, but it's got "kill" in it, and when I say the name I think "killing him". I do like Braeden, and the way you're choosing to spell it. Overall, not a hideous name, and your child, so you name him whatever you want!

I'm looking at the statistics for babies born in the United States in 2007, which has Brayden at #64, Braden at #156, and Braeden at #335.

Killian is in my top 3 names.

I still haven't decided on the spelling it with a K or C thing, though. I kind of like the way it looks with a K (the fact that it has "kill" in it doesn't bother me) and I think he'd go through life with his name being pronounced correctly more often.

I'm not a huge fan of Braeden, but I think it goes well with Killian. :)

Cillian is on my list, but with that spelling. If you want authentic Irish names for your son, spell it the traditional way. Thanks to Cillian Murphy, people are familiar enough with Cillian in the non-Irish world to know that it isn't pronounced Silly-an.

There are some Irish names that really don't need Anglicizing... I mean, if you were having a daughter and wanted to call her Caoimhe, I can understand why you might Anglicize it to Keeva, but I don't think that Cillian needs to be spelled with a K to make it 'easier'.

Besides which, written down, Cillian Braeden Wrigley looks so much nicer than Killian Braeden Wrigley. Just my two cents, but I've been tossing up 'authentic vs. easy' for a while now, and have come to the conclusion that people will learn if they don't know, and that it's better to spell something right than to spell it 'easy'.
