I actually know someone named Holland, but she goes by Holly.
I'm really not a fan of any of them though.

I also had a counselor at camp named Verona. she always had to tell people "it rhymes with Corona."

Odessa, Lourdes and Ravenna are my guilty pleasure place-names-as-names.

I also quite like London & Rio. Milan is actually not very unusual here! Never thought about that as a place name.

I like Catalina and Valencia (Val for short). So so on Verona; if it were a middle name I'd like it more. If we're going by place names, I really like Alexandria.

Okay honestly, I'm overall not a fan of sticking place names on children, although I've known an India and I know a Florence. My big hate is London, purely because I used to live there and it has bad connotations.

I don't see Devon on the list, which is good because I don't like that name either. Next thing you know you'll end up with sibsets of Devon, Somerset, Essex and Herefordshire.

Being said, I do like Odessa and Siena, because they sound pretty :)

Do you still live in Geneva now? The only reason I ask is that in my experience people tend to laugh at names of nearby places. I know I love the name Mason..but unless I move from Southern Ohio it's out of my range of possibility for names because everytime I suggest it people erupt in laughter and go "Isn't that a city?"

(Mason is a suburb of Cincinnati)

I always, always forget Florence. I love that one, too.

I agree. I'm living in Holland, and so I find the name Holland very strange.

I think Vienna is pretty, but it reminds me wayyy too much Vienna Sausages which, while scrumptious, are not something I'd want people thinking of when they heard my name.

Yeah, unless you actually live very, very far away from the place you're naming your kid after, then I really wouldn't bother, as people will know (and so should you if you live near the place) that it's not (because very few places are) as idealistic and romanticised as I'd assume you'd want for you're kid's name.

I love love love the name Geneva! It's one of my favourite names ever.

I'm surprised the list doesn't have Paris.

I secretly love place names. I've had a rat named Paris, a cat named Eden, and my new puppy girl is Berlin. My friend's niece and my cousin's chinchilla are both named Venice. I met a cute little girl named London the other day.

I have a cousin named Clayton, and there's a suburb nearby with the same name. He often is teased with the names of other nearby suburbs ("Hey, Brentwood!")

Anyhow, from the list, I love
Africa (but I'd be too wimpy to actually use it)
Andorra
Cairo
Catalina
Egypt
Geneva
Holland
Jamaica
Odessa
Sahara
Verona

Catalina IS a girl's name. Santa Catalina Island is named after Saint Catherine.
