A mom and her son came into work today. Perfectly normal looking family. I heard her calling "Callum" so I wondered how she spelled. She filled out a form and added her son's name. Pronounce Callum, yes, but spelled Kalyem. What is wrong with some people? It makes me wonder what their train of thought is!

My theory is that people think they are giving their child(ren) a unique name when it's spelt differently, but really, it's not.

Their train of thought is that their child is SO special and SO unique than they need an equally special and unique name. That way, when they climb the academic, corporate and political ladders, go on to rule the country and then the WORLD, they'll have that fabulous, albeit strange, name to carry with them!

"Maybe if I spell it differently, it'll make the name even BETTER!"

People seem to forget that adding certain letters changes the pronunciation. You can't just say "This is how I'll spell it and this is how I'll pronounce it". Err, no. That name right there is Kal-yem. As in, the y does have a sound. Geez! Ugh, people.
