Jesse James rolls off the tongue easier, but I don't know if it'd sound good after about thousandth low-brow joke whenever it was said. Especially to the boy.
Jesse James is sort of a hick name in my mind. My family got stationed in Missouri and I've met five kids named Jesse James around here. I assume it's because the Outlaw was supposed to have hidden in the caves or something in the area.
Either way, it's not a good connotation. Didn't you ever see the Brady Bunch episode where Bobby was obsessed with Jesse James and they had an actor play Jesse James's son and explain to Bobby how his father was a murderer and was not a man to be revered?
I have a brother names Jason James and a friend named the same. I think Jesse James is just so common and I think Jason James sounds better. Either way they could easily get the nickname Jayjay, so I hope you're okay with that :)
Jesse James just doesnt do it for me...it sounds silly imo. I know someone with that name and it just seems weird for a grown man to go by "Jesse James".
