Imagine you met someone named Rory.

Does that name belong to a girl or boy?

Female and it's short for Aurora.

Boy, for sure. The only Rory I know is this manly, muscular guy, but I think even if I didn't know him, it would still seem like a very male name.

I'd assume it was a boy - but I prefer the name on a girl.

Boy. I have only heard this being suggested for girls recently and I think it sounds ridiculous! It's such a masculine name...it'd be like calling your daughter John or something.

One of my favorite characters of ALL TIME is named Rory and he´s a boy... well his full name is Rordan Brody and everyone calls him Rory. Everyone sees it as a girl´s name and his girlfriend is named Damien (another guilty pleasure of mine for a girl...)

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure "Rory" is also used as a form of Jr.

For instance, Damien Lucifer Satan, Sr would name his son Damien Lucifer Satan, Jr and Jr would go by Rory.

The first time I ever heard it was on Gilmore Girls so now I automatically associate it with a girl.

Boy. The first time I heard it was on a TV show long before Gilmore Girls and the character was a boy. Plus I think it's quite masculine.

Either or, prefer it on a girl. To me it's more of a nickname, and what boy's name would it be a nickname for?

Girl, because the only Rory I ever met was a girl.

I'd think of a boy (because of knowing it's a boy's name), but would think he has a girl's name. To me, it's a nickname for Aurora.

I automatically think boy and I do believe it means red haired.
That being said I adore it and the suggestion of it being short for Aurora - I really like!

I've known two Rories, both male, so I think of it as a boy's name, but as a very feminine boy's name.

It's one name that I think is completely unisex.

I think girl, because I ALMOST named my daughter Rory. I'm planning on using it if #2 is a girl :D But it's definitely unisex. There's a male actor Rory Cochran (Lucas in Empire Records, Speed in CSI Miami).

It's not usually short for anything, although I once knew a Roderick who went by Rory. It's a full name in itself. Is it really rare in the US or something? I'm surprised by how many people seem to think it's a girls' name/nickname. It's a fairly traditional, if slightly posh, name for men in the UK.

I may have heard it before, but I associate it so much with Gilmore Girls (ick) now that it's hard to see it as anything else and I honestly can't remember if I heard it one men before that show.

No, it was not a common name here, but is becoming more so.

Boy, although I don't mind it on girls. I've known two male Rorys and no female Rorys though so it's more masculine to me (this is in the US by the way).

A boy, because I grew up with a Rory who was a boy.
