I know we commonly talk about naming people after book characters or historical figures in this community, but what do you think about naming someone so that their name incorporates their namesakes full name? For instance, if your last name was Brown,

Anne Shirley Brown
Elizabeth Bennet Brown
Josephine March Brown
Thomas Sawyer Brown
David Copperfield Brown

etc. I kind of like the idea.

I love the concept of tribute names, but sticking the kid with the whole character's name is a bit too much for me.

Also, not all last names are suitable middle names, in my taste.

hard to say. I kind of like the idea, but we are using family names for middle names, so we'd never do it. if I had to think about it seriously in a "are we actually going through with this?" sort of way, I might decide something more subtle would be better.

Especially because where I'm from (don't know about other regions), middle names don't really matter.

I definitely don't like it. It's just too much, in my opinion. I want to name my daughter after Jane Austen, for example, but I don't want to her be constantly reminded that that's her namesake. I want her to feel like she's got her own name, and it's not all entirely built up on this one person or character. It's just too overwhelming to have to carry around the entire name.

Well, I did name my daughter Annika, after Pippi Longstocking's friend. Ha!

But she's a double tribute. My (ex)FIL's name is Arthur, Art for short. My daughter purposely has an R middle name (Rose), to make her initials ART. So while, technically, she isn't directly named after him, she is, purposely, carrying his name. :) (His ex wife, my ex-husband's mother, gave him 3 sons, and one was a Jr, but thats the son that hates him, no one knows why.)

Edited for icon change. :D

I don't really like it, I have to say. I don't see anything wrong just one name, because then if your kid doesn't like the tribute they can go by the other name, but what if your kid hates David Copperfield? Can't stand Anne of Green Gables? It doesn't give them a choice. I think that it being the full name is a bit much.

I mean, I was named Jerika, after Jem and the Holograms, and I guess that that's okay, but it doesn't mean I'd be impressed if my middle name was Benton. It just seems like a whole lot of tribute to dump on one kid or something.

I like naming kids after literary/historical figures (I was named after one, myself) but I think adding the last name in is a little much. At least without the surname as a middle name, they can pretend they weren't necessarily named after the literary/historical figure in question if they don't like them.

It certainly feels like too much to me and I don't like it, but I don't have any really good reason why not. I think I just don't like anyone enough to give their ENTIRE name to someone, although sharing a namesake with someone special to me would be nice in some ways... the whole name seems like overkill and like you don't have your own identity, maybe.

How is he pronouncing it? I absolutely HATE it as "ann-ik-ah", my daughter's name is "ah-nick-ah" which is WAYYY prettier. :D

He doesn't like either pronunciation. I like both pronunciations but I would think Annika would be "ann-ik-ah" and Anika could be either way. Although I guess that is not the case for your daughter!

I just can't get him to like it at all and it's always been one of my favourites, ever since I was 8 and my younger brother went to preschool with an Anika. Oh well... there will be other names when the time comes haha

Well, its ah-nick-ah or if I think about it... "ohn-nick-ah" which uses both the n's in her name, LOL.

And yeah, always more names. Not for me though *pets tubal scars sweetly*! :D

LOL! Well I'm glad to know that somebody out there got to be called Annika even if it's not my potential daughter. She looks adorable in your icon btw ;)
