[identity profile] my-little-voice.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So one of my friends was working at an upscale spa a few months back.  This mother came in with her 3 year old and baby.  The girls at the desk asked what the baby's name was.....

It was Flashlight.

They had her repeat it.

Flashlight.

Apparently she and her husband let the 3 year old name the baby.  Now what were they thinking?

I don't expect a happy relationship between that baby and the older one.

There is a reason you don't let 3 year olds pick names.

I am laughing SO GODDAMN HARD.

I knew someone who let their toddler name the baby. She came up with Aya Rose. At least that's, you know, CLOSE to a name. I met someone else who let a little kid name the baby and they came up with "Kiffie."

Also, some celebrity was on an interview show saying that he asked his little girl what she wanted to name their impending baby. Apparently she said for a girl, Madeline, and for a boy Tree or Pepito. *giggle*

Yeah. Moral of the story, don't let little kids name babies.

I wonder if Flashlight has a middle name...

Are you sure it wasn't a nickname?

I think you could maybe suggest a bunch of names to an older sibling and let them pick one, but don't let them just think up one of their own.

So giving your 3-year-old input in the next baby's name, or even a chance to pick it, is sort of sweet. However, using the name they pick regardless of what it was, is really, incredibly stupid.

I think no matter what you let them name it, one of them is still going to smoosh peanut butter in the other's bedsheets when they aren't looking.

OMG.

In some cases, I understand. Trying to include the older siblings and all. Which is fine. But you really have to draw the line somewhere, you know? I really really hope that it's not ACTUALLY the baby's name -- maybe they just TELL the older daughter that her name is Flashlight but it's really, like, Abigail or something on the birth certificate?

Yeah. I'm reaching. But I'm hoping.

In some cases, this can turn out okay. My brother got to pick my name (it was between Lindsay and Erin; he picked Lindsay, because he hated this girl named Erin who went to the same babysitter) and it worked out, and the same goes for my best friend, whose older sister picked her name from a list of five: Adrienne, Julie, Elizabeth, Megan, and Gabrielle -- she picked Adrienne Elizabeth. My brother was 2-1/2 at the time, and Claire had JUST turned two, so it's not like they had wonderful taste in names, either. Mike originally wanted to name me Small Bear.

Thus the reason you need guidelines for the picking of a baby name if asking a THREE YEAR OLD for suggestions. Jeesh.

Um. No.

It's one thing to ask a sibling to help in coming up with names, but that doesn't mean you're actually supposed to use it if it is ridiculous.

I kind of like the idea of asking the sibling to choose from an already pre-approved list. I'm not sure if I would actually ever do that, but it's something to think about.

And yeah, if Flashlight was just the nickname or something, that would be forgivable ... but then at what point do you clue the older kid in?

Anyone watch Doug? It was a popular kids cartoon on Nickelodeon when I was a kid.

Cleopatra Dirtbike Funny was the youngest Funny child. Doug picked one name, his sister Judy picked the other, and since it was a girl they went with Cleopatra. That's probably the only thing that has stuck with me from that show.

Little Flashlight will probably need a lot of therapy.

It is always a bad idea to let kids pick sibling names; that's how my youngest cousin got named Sally. A great big step up from Flashlight. But still...Sally.

I think I had about 15 dolls named Sally throughout the course of my childhood.

that actually really depresses me.

That's terrible. Why would you let your 3 year old name your child? Seriously? Maybe if they could come up with a good name, but Flashlight?! Holy fucking hell.

Sad. I agree with previous posters that they could have suggested names to the child or even simply decided not to name the baby after a tube of light.

When I was 7 I wanted to name my baby sibling after my little boyfriend Shaun, or his sister Jacinta! I had no input whatsoever - the baby was named Matthew.

My cousin was 4 and wanted to name his sibling Elvis (if it was a boy) and Mrs Elvis (obviously, if it was a girl). Thankfully my aunt and uncle were SANE and named the baby themselves - Lilly.

Maybe she was just messing with you. Maybe the kid has a really awesome name, and she's worried someone will steal it, so she's telling everyone they named it Flashlight.

What's the point in having an awesome name if you don't use it? Guarding the name during pregnancy?-- maybe, but after birth?

I was looking through one of my spare rooms in the house the other day and found my whole collection of Anastasia books. I will NOT be giving them away in a hurry.
All I can remember from one of them was when the parents had people over, and Sam went downstairs in a mac and flashed them haha

I suppose I'm clutching at straws. I really, really don't want to believe that there is a child named Flashlight.

That sounds like something I would do... well, not NAMING the kids Flashlight but SAYING I did. Just because it's fun to mess with people sometimes. My mom has a different last name that I do, because she kept her maiden name when she married my dad. One time this lady that hardly knew me or my mother asked why we had different last names. I was 15 at the time and told her I was married, because- Hey! None of her business!

So... I'm praying she was joking. Otherwise... I'm praying Flashlight doesn't turn out like The Joker. I can see her running around saying "Why so DARK?"

Or... him. I just realized that we don't know Flashlight's sex, do we?

IAWTC. I'd give them my name list and have them pick one.
