I'm just looking for opinions, though I'm not yet pregnant with Baby #2. I guess thinking about names is tiding me over for the next 9 months until we're ready to start trying :)

My 15 month old daughter is named Ellasyn and goes by Ella sometimes. I thought the next girl name on my list was Ainsley, but the other night a thought occured to me about the name Emmersyn, with the nickname Emme. Today was the first time I really saw how it looked written out and now I'm on the fence. I've read some other opinions other places about how Emerson (the typical spelling) means the son of emery, but to be quite honest, the "meanings" of names don't really mean much to me...it certainly didn't when we chose the name Ellasyn. Different and unique is more important to me than meaning. We're choosing middle names that are family names...so I'm not yet sure what middle name we would stick with Emmersyn.

Any thoughts?

To me Ella and Emme are just too close to the same name. (Same length, same first letter, double consonants ending with a vowel, etc.)

Ellasyn and Emmersyn are WAY too similar. It would look/sound pretty tacky, to be honest. Especially with that 'syn' ending. I'd stick with Ainsley, for sure.

If you're a big fan of Ralph Waldo Emerson and would like to honor him, go for it, but even spelled with a y (which just looks ignorant and will look bad on college and job applications), it is still a rather macho-sounding name. Ellasyn and Emersyn also sound extremely similar and I think children deserve to have names that are entirely their own, rather than names that brand them as part of a "sib set."

The spelling did look somewhat funny to me once I wrote it out. But I think Emmersyn looks more feminine than Emerson. Just like with my daughter's name I saw that someone else recently named their daughter the same, but it's spelled Ellison...which to me seems masculine.

They are incredibly similar which is another reason, besides how funny Emmersyn looked when I wrote it, it made me rethink things. Who knows......I've got plenty of time to decide. Besides I hope the next one is a boy :) LOL!

I don't really necessarily think it's a macho sounding name. I think it can look more masculine depending on how it's spelled, but the similarities of the names do bother me a tad. I'm hoping for a boy the next time around anyway, so hopefully this won't even be an issue.

I think Ellasyn and Emerson/Emersyn sound too similar to be a sib-set. Also, since J-Lo just named one of her babies Emme, that name might become very popular.

We do. We didn't know the gender of our first born, so the names we had picked out were Ellasyn Loren Marie (I know it's a mouthfull, but it was important to me to name her after my dad's dad and my mom's mom) and Asher Joshua (Joshua being my husband's name). As of now our plan is to stick with Asher for a boy (which I hope is next) unless something else jumps out at us.

After seeing Emmersyn spelled out, I'm not as big of a fan and would probably going with Ainsley.

Like Emerson for a boy, possibly even on a girl, but not that spelling. It's way too close to Ellasyn. (I have a cousin named Ellison that we call Ellie.) I don't like Ainsley. It has a whiny sound when said aloud that rubs me the wrong way.

As with quite a few others, I think Ellasyn and Emmersyn are too close together for sisters. Other 'yn' names that don't sound so close that you might like: Caryn (now in my top ten), Aderyn, Tamsyn, Sherilyn, Jocelyn, Rosalyn, Marilyn/Merilyn.

Ainsley is boy's name to me - at least where I am it is very much connected with a (male) chef.

I like your top boy's name, Asher, as well as Garrett a lot, and I quite like Zane and Wylie.

Regardless of how you spell the name, it's still masculine. Changing the spelling might make it LOOK more feminine, but it doesn't change the sound, which is going to be the problem 95% of the time.

Also, Emerson is awful on a girl, regardless of the spelling. It's much nicer on a boy. What about Emmeline with Emme as the nickname?

As for your names...to be perfectly honest, they're all pretty awful. The only ones I can stand are Garrett (although I like it with one T better) and Madeleine, provided, it's spelt correctly.

I really think that Emmersyn is best for a boy, changing the spelling doesn't make the name SOUND any more feminine. However, I adore the names Giana an Madelyn (however, I'm not crazy about the spelling on Madeleine).

Kameryn looks VERY feminine so you might want to consider that, the same way with Gavyn.

I love the names Asher and Garrett.

Sorry, but I don't like any of the names, and none of them are even slightly unique or different. They read as stereotypical names in the supposedly 'creative' genre (i.e. bad spelling, inserting Ys at random, -yn & -on endings etc etc).

Fine, if that's what you like, but don't kid yourself you're being unique. There's no Unique Trophy for the worst spelt name, they all just sludge together in a sea of anonymity.

I actually somewhat agree with you on some of your opinions. As I said, this was the list we had for our 1st child...my outlook on several of the them have actually changed.

It's funny you mention that. When I was compiling the list initially back before my daughter was born, I didn't even realize that I had a tendency to choose spellings with a "y" until I went back and looked at it all together. It did show up a tad too much.

I actually had no intention of trying to be "unique" by simply choosing names that were spelled with "y". As I was looking on a website and compiling names those just happened to be what I chose (and the spellings were not necessarily to be that way). I actually didn't realize until I went back and looked at the entire compiled list that there were so many of them spelled with a "y". Apparently something about it struck my interest back then.

And when I speak of "unique" I really mean something other than what is more common. My husband and I both have rather common names though mine is spelled differently and we both wanted something different for our children.

I think the main reason the spelling was changed is that Emerson appeared more masculine to me and I don't really like it spelled the "normal" way. But as I said, once I actually saw Emmersyn written, it looked strange to me as well. No offense taken.

I would personally go with Ainsley, and not go anywhere near touching Emmersyn. Adding y's to things do not make them more feminine; they make them uglier. Emerson, the actual spelling, is actually cute, even on girls. Ellasyn and Emmersyn are so similar, it's kind of tacky.

For the name Ellasyn, that's the only feminine version. Ellison is the male version.

Actually people have been spelling my name wrong my entire life and it's not a huge deal. Aside from that, she also goes by Ella and can choose when she gets old enough to care which name she prefers.

I know the feeling - my top boy's name list has very obvious trends in it (Owen, Franklin, Edwin, Paden followed by Jeremy, Gregory, Zachary...) that keep popping up when I'm looking through names.
