[identity profile] knava.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So I'm 30 weeks now and we have absolutely no name picked out. My husband randomly decided to google "cool boy names" the other day and led us to a page with the name Axton on it. I actually really kind of like it.
Also, if any of you could possibly tell me where the name comes from, I'd be really interested. I tried putting it into baby name searches and have come up with nothing.

I hate that I don't have a set name picked out. I really wish I had something to call my son right now. I just feel like I'm never going to find a name that I love, and I'll most likely just end up settling on a name that I don't hate. Have any of you ever "settled" on a name because you just couldn't come up with anything you really loved? Did you grow to love the name? I need some hope here =/

I know its a surname, too. There was a singer named Hoyt Axton.

My son's second middle name is Lovel - it's a family name on my husband's side [first son always has it, my husband's brother has it and there was pain of death of not using it ;)]. I didn't not like it at first, but I didn't *love* it. Now I do and sometimes wish I'd used it as a first name as it's so unusual and meaning of 'little wolf' certainly suits him just as much as Owen

We settled on Gabrielle because it was the only name we both liked. It wasn't on either of our favorites list and neither of us OMG love it. We both like it though.

I still don't OMG love the name, I don't think I ever will, but I know it's my daughters name and it fits her. I think no matter what you name him you grow use to it.

He wanted to name her Danica or Lindsay. I wanted Eliza or Josephine.

I think Gabrielle is a beautiful name. :)

And to the OP: I like Jaxton too.

What do you think of Axel? It's a Scandinavian boy's name, similar to Axton but less made-up sounding. To me, Axton looks like somebody tried to make "Ashton" look cooler.

Other cool boy names:
Hugo
Milo
Leo
Nico (I'm sensing a pattern here;))
Oliver
Cole
Torben
Soren
Adrian
Alexander (nn Xander/Xan)
Kellen
Zachary
Jonas

A friend just named her puppy Axel, and every time anyone says his name, it sounds like a**hole.

I'm not really a fan of Axton, but I don't think it's awful. I just think it's kind of stuffy-sounding as a full name, and he'd probably get called Axe a lot.

Why not Ashton or Braxton instead? They're not my favorites, but I think they'd be a lot easier to live with. If I were male, I'd rather my name be Ashton or Braxton than Axton.

I don't know. I think Axel seems pretty made up, even if it is legitimate (http://www.babynamer.com/Axel). I guess it's because it's both a wheel part in English and, more importantly, a singer's name*. I imagine that it's hard for most Americans to divorce Axel from Axel Rose.

Names with "ck", "k", "sk" might be good sound-alikes. "Jackson" is close.

*NB: I had another tab open and poked around there for a little while before posting. I couldn't figure out why I suddenly had "Sweet Child of Mine" stuck in my head until I came back to this comment.

IDK, I think there's a fine line between cool and too-cool, and the far end of the scale is creative.

So I'd say go for a name that's more recognizable (I don't mean more 'popular') than Axton - which does sound invented, even if it isn't. Some supposedly common names are actually quite rare these days, rarer than the 'cool' names.

I feel the same way about all my names, but luckily I'm not pregnant. There are plenty of names I like, but none I really love and must use. I kind of wish there was, and hope there will be by the time I have kids.

Maybe you could go through the current list of most popular names, and go through the top 1000, and write down all the ones that interest you, and your husband can do the same, and then you can both kind of rank all the ones you came up with and see which ones come out the highest on both your lists. (I would add them together or average them so it takes into account each person's preferences). You may be surprised at what comes up and some of those names might grow on you.

It will also give you a good idea of how popular the names are. You can choose to look at the number or percentage of babies born. Something that ranks like 678 is actually really rare, but even 40th might be pretty rare depending on how common all the names above it are.

It makes me think that if they hadn't Igor they would have went with Hugo instead.

I like Jonas actually.
