Changing YOUR name
Jul. 9th, 2008 12:34 pmI know the majority of posts in here are about what people are naming/planning on naming their children but I am curious about YOUR name!
- What is your name? (first and middle or just first, whatever you want)
- Have you ever changed your name?
- How do you feel about celebrities or anyone in general legally changing their name??
- If you were going to change your name, what would you change it to?

Date: 2008-07-09 05:55 pm (UTC)2) nope
3) If they feel the need to it's probably for a good reason
4) I'd probably change it to Kimberly. It's not a name I particularly love, but it's a very "me" name, I think. People have mistook me for a Kim or said that I looked like a Kim before - not sure why but okay, I guess my other name is Kim!

Date: 2008-07-09 05:58 pm (UTC)No, but I'm thinking of changing my middle eventually.
I guess it depends.
I'd change Aileen to Elaine. Same exact letters, totally different grandmas.
I never met the one named Aileen (she died when I was six months old) and I never even met that side of the family until a few months ago. The one with Elaine raised me.

I don't care
I'd change it to Rya

Date: 2008-07-09 06:15 pm (UTC)- I have not
- No matter who it is, I do find it a little weird, because your family, your friends, they all know you by something, and then the next day, it's not your name. But I assume that everybody who changes their name has a reason, and that's great for them.
- I really have no idea. It's not something that I've seriously considered; and now, after 18 years with it, I feel like my name. I can't see myself with anything else.

Date: 2008-07-09 06:20 pm (UTC)2. No, but I wanted to when I was a little kid
3. I don't really care either way. There are perfectly good reasons to want to do so, but even if you don't have a 'good' reason it's totally up to you anyway.
4. At this point in my life, I wouldn't. When I was little, though, I wanted to be a Sarah, because it was normal.

Date: 2008-07-09 06:22 pm (UTC)Just when I got married, but only my last name.
Celebrities that change their names don't bother me, really. It seems silly to take on an entirely new identity, but I know that sometimes they have to change it to make it more marketable. As long as it isn't anything atrocious, name changes are pretty low on my radar.
I have no idea what I would change my name to. I love it. It has great significance to me and I know the reasoning behind both of my names, so it really strikes a chord with me emotionally. I remember wanting a "normal" name when I was a kid, like Stephanie or Amanda. But, now that I'm older, I just don't think those would "fit" me.

Eh, whatever they want.
Probably Samantha but go by Ssm...ignoring that its my cousin's name.

Date: 2008-07-09 06:38 pm (UTC)2) Not legally, but when I was younger, I tried out different nicknames and alternate spellings.
3) It doesn't bother me, and I don't really have an opinion.
4) I love my name, and I wouldn't change it. The only thing I would change if I could, is the way people automatically shorten my name to 'Alex' or 'Alexis' it's frustrating, because if I wanted to be addressed as Alex, I would have introduce myself as such.

Date: 2008-07-09 06:40 pm (UTC)When I was a kid I wanted to change my name to Violet.
If I could change my name now I would probably change it to Elizabeth, because everyone calls me that by mistake. Even my parents sometimes. I guess I must really look like an Elizabeth!

Date: 2008-07-09 07:14 pm (UTC)Nope.
I think it's weirder for celebrities, because people will always know them by their stage name anyways.
I would change my middle names, and I've been fiddling around with alternatives for a good 10 years now, but can't make up my mind.
Options I've considered: Lynn, Amber, Taylor
Good question!
Date: 2008-07-09 07:23 pm (UTC)When I was 7 I was legally adopted by my step-dad and had to get a new birth certificate, so I was given the option of changing my name if I wanted to. I came very close to switching my middle and first name around, and going by Gayle. But I have always loved my name, and ended up keeping it.
Celebrities change their names to make them sound less foreign or alien, which I don't really agree with, but if they are just trying to make something easier for the public to pronounce, I can't really blame them.

Date: 2008-07-09 07:52 pm (UTC)As far as people changing their name... I dunno, I really couldn't care less what anyone else does. Probably celebrities (or normal people) feel there's some benefit if they change their name, whether it be more "celebrity" worthy or whatever. I really could NOT care less.
If I were going to change my name... I don't know, maybe Sophie? I really can't picture myself with another name.

Date: 2008-07-09 07:57 pm (UTC)Changed my middle to my maiden name when I got married (Whitman)
I'm totally cool with legal name changes, whoever decides to do it.
I have never really thought about what my name would be otherwise. I like my name.

Date: 2008-07-09 08:38 pm (UTC)* Have you ever changed your name? No but I've seriously thought about it, a lot.
* How do you feel about celebrities or anyone in general legally changing their name?? Ehh that's their business, they're fully allowed. :3
* If you were going to change your name, what would you change it to? I'd change just my first name, to Pia. That's what almost everyone calls me anyway, and that's how I introduce myself to new people (except friends of my family, I get introduced to them as Jennifer still).
-Pia, after Piankhi, a king from ancient Nubia. I'm a girl but the name just stuck with me and I love it.

How do you feel about celebrities or anyone in general legally changing their name? I don't think their is anything wrong with legally changing names because some names are just horrid! But I think it's stupid with they change their name to "Angel Princess" or something to that effect!
If you were going to change your name, what would you change it to? I like my name it flows nicely, but when I was little it was always a drag having a long name!

Date: 2008-07-09 10:11 pm (UTC)I have always gone by Shelley (i thought it was my name till i was about 9)
a few years ago my mum dropped the Y off shelley and made it shelle, that stuck too. lol. I changed my last name when i got married.
People change their names for all kinds of reasons. it doesnt bother me. I dont think i would change my name. I have learned to answer to shelley or giselle. though sometimes its confusing which name i have left for someone when they are looking for records. *smiles*

3. I don't mind it if people change their names.. sometimes I wonder why, but that's their business.
4. I think my name suits me. Lately, I've been thinking about adding my mom's maiden name as a middle name.

Date: 2008-07-09 10:15 pm (UTC)* Not legally, yet. But generally answer to Sage and use that when I get a say in the matter.
* Neutral/in favour; can obviously understand why they would want to. And it's their life, so whatever.
* Mine, obviously. Clair is my given mn, but I did give serious consideration to Elise or Caroline. I do use a pen name; but love my last name so wouldn't ever seriously change it.

Date: 2008-07-09 11:01 pm (UTC)2) I added the Elizabeth, if that counts. But other than that nope.
3) It doesn't really matter to me. I mean, everyone has their reasons.
4) I don't know. I love my name and I think it suits me. But if I had too, I'd probably change it to Audrey.

Have you ever changed your name?
No.
How do you feel about celebrities or anyone in general legally changing their name?
I think it's fine. I plan to do it.
If you were going to change your name, what would you change it to?
Octavia. It's unique, ancient, and my favorite number has been 8 since I was little. :)

Date: 2008-07-10 02:07 am (UTC)2) I've never changed my name, but I got everybody to call me Maya when I was about 12 cos I loved it xD. Most people call me by my real name nowadays but a lot of friends call me Shorty. My Dad & stepmum call me Meegs though xD
3) I don't mind.
4) Well, I'd LOVE to change it to Maya (obviously since I got people to call me it xD) or Joanne, that's my fave girls' name.

Date: 2008-07-10 03:12 am (UTC)2. nope, always went by Alyssa, well except that brief period in high school where I tried to get my teachers to call me Lys, but by that time, I had already had most of them the year before so they called me Alyssa, I also didn't do a very good job of "trying" to get them to do it, because all I did was write Lys K***** on my papers instead of Alyssa. Oh wait does Spanish class count? I went by Elisa and Isabella in those classes.
3. I don't care, it's their name they can do what they want.
4. Hmmm, I don't know what I'd change my name to. Maybe Ada?

Date: 2008-07-10 03:13 am (UTC)I don't care if other people do, but I think sometimes it's kind of lame. Like the people who do it to be "different" and end up sounding like strippers? That's lame. But changing your name to something that means something to you is fine with me. I'd just say that the same rules apply as for naming your child. You have to consider how other people are going to see it.
If I were to change my name, I'd probably go with something like Erin, Emily, Leah, or Annie.

3) It's their own decision - if they want to, go for it.
4) I have no idea. I don't think I could change my name, just for the simple fact that I could never get used to another name like I have my own. It's mine, and I'm attached to it. Besides, I like the slight uniqueness of it - I've only met two other Julianne's :)

Date: 2008-07-10 07:11 am (UTC)no, but i kind of want to change my last name
i always thought it was sad they did that, i mean go with your !given name~ but now i don't care
something pretty, idk. Jessica is just WAY too common. maybe i'd switch my middle and first name, & i always used to hate my middle name

Date: 2008-07-10 08:02 am (UTC)- Only changed my surname when I got married. That was hassle enough- I think changing my given name, which people don't expect as much, would be too much effort. I am used to having my name and it seems too stable to just change for no good reason. If I hated it, found it upsetting in some way, and had something else I was used to going by, I would think about changing it.
- I think it could be a good idea for celebrities to have a stage name.... as for changing their name once they're already famous, it seems a bit of a bad idea because names are pretty important once you're famous. As for people in general, I have no problem with it, but I've never met anyone close to me who did a drastic name change and started insisting on everyone calling them something we didn't know them by. If that happened it might be a little hard to deal with, but it's their choice.
- I would have to spend ages thinking that through, I don't identify with any other name. If I lived in another culture with a different language I might want to change my name to something of that culture, because lots of languages find Claire hard to say. But I have no idea what.

3) It's personal choice, really, and some people's birth names aren't compatible to stardom. If it helped their career, fine!
4) I always LOVED my middle name Emily growing up and wanted to switch my names around, even up until age 14-15. I guess it's because not many Australians pronounced Bianca correctly and it sounds really nasally here. Now I'm more focused on what I'm going to name my future kids and don't think I would change my name.

It's a personal choice, who am I to judge?
I would shorten it to Kris.

Date: 2008-07-10 06:55 pm (UTC)I would never change my first names, I think they are pretty and I really like them both. I just couldn't imagine myself with another name because my name is just such a big part of my personality. My second name was given to me after a song. I will probably change my name when I get married since my surname is the third most popular surname in Finland (Nieminen). I still prefer it to my mum's name, which is Karvinen= Garfield's name in Finnish :D
I really don't care if people change their names. I wouldn't change mine but everybody else can do what ever they want with their names. Some celebrities kids will probably change their names in the future and I have nothing against that.

Date: 2008-07-12 12:04 am (UTC)2. No, I've finally gotten used to it.
3. Sometimes they don't have a choice. In certain areas of entertainment if you join the union (SAG, AEA etc..and you often HAVE to be in the union to perform) you cannot have the same name as another member so they're forced to change something about their name or change their name all together. It's how so many people end up having a very First/Middle name instead of a First/Last. One of my friends is Sara F., and professionally goes by Sara Rae because there's already a Sara F. in SAG and AEA.
4. I've always loved the name Lydia, or Caroline.
