[identity profile] moshimoshi-13.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

"Maybe you're sick of fashion. Fed up with fads. Perhaps all the creativity and invention with names is beginning to feel like anything but that to you. For your child, you want a straightforward, down-to-earth, no-nonsense name. You want a name with history, but also one that's honest, that's not putting on airs. Some of the names here - let's face it, Hilda - are a little flat-footed. But many sound appealingly simple and fresh compared with the rich diet of Dakotas and Donatellas the world of baby-naming has been feasting on"

That first paragraph sounds like me and go figure my children's names Abigail and Simon are on the list!

Just noticed Lucy is on that list too which is the name I'd like to name another daughter if we have one some day :)

Must be true, I love many more names from this list than the previous lists :D
although for me it applies only to girls. I don't like almost any of the boy names.

My mind read that paragraph in a burly man's BUILT FORD TOUGH growl. "YOU WANT A NAME THAT'S RELIABLE. YOU WANT A NAME YOU CAN DEPEND ON. MOST OF ALL, YOU WANT A NAME YOU CAN DRIVE UP THE SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN DURING A MUDSLIDE."

Hilda's a favorite of mine. I love how the book sells it. "Sure, this name's boring...but maybe you want to use it anyway?"

OT but my husband just literally squealed at your icon.
And then he told me to tell you that you should listen to Dr. Dog "because it's like Neutral Milk Hotel meets The Beatles"

>>I wonder why so many other biblical names are common and accepted, but it would be strange to meet someone called Moses.

Especially because the name of the Prophet Mohammad is so common among Muslims and in Arabic-speaking countries and Jesús is pretty common in many Spanish-speaking countries.

There are a lot of Orthodox Jews called Moshe, though, which is the Yiddish form of Moses, and Moises isn't an unheard of name. I like the name Moses and have considered Moshe mainly because, as you say, there are hardly any Moseses.
