[identity profile] uppity-heathen.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I have wanted to name a little girl Dagny for so many years now. Finally, I am pregnant and having a little girl.

I cannot come up with any middle names that sound perfect to me though. I don't want a common name. Dagny Elizabeth is pretty but Elizabeth is so popular and it is meaningless to me.

I would love a name that has meaning. I like words for names and unusual names but I would also like it to sound pretty. I have considered several Indian words and several Japanese words but none have struck me as "the one."

If it helps, I love literature and got Dagny's name from a book. I am a feminist and a vegetarian. Compassion and strong women in history or literature are some of the things I am trying to keep in mind when looking for names.

Any suggestions?

How do you pronounce Dagny?

Interesting! I like it.

Going off the feminist thing, you could use the name of a famous feminist. If you really like Elizabeth, Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor.

Dagny (although I love it spelled Dagne) Lenore. Lenore is a form of Eleanor...Eleanor Roosevelt =).

My first suggestion is my favorite name. It means she who will not flee, inescapable, loyal, depending on where you look. There are two different pns -

Adrasteia

(pn ad ra STAY a)

or

Adrastea

(pn ah drah STAY ah or AD rah STEE ah)

Dagny's such a frickin' awesome name, it'll be hard to follow up. Any particularly kickass women in your family line? Anyone you looked up to as a young girl?

I like Dagne better to. You could always do Elizabeth for queen Elizabeth.

I would suggest using a family name, go back through your family and find something, or something important to you, rather than a famous name since you're already using a literary name for the first.

Have you thought about what specific meaning you would like the name to have?
Or at least, what theme it should go along? (ie. nature, music, literature, etc)

A name that jumps out at me that you may like is Dagny Masua, it corresponds with the New Moon which is a feminine holiday in many cultures and faiths and I find rather nice against the new day meaning of Dagny.

All awesome writers/women. I'm assuming Margaret is Margaret Atwood? She was my mom's neighbour back in the 70s. I'm jealous of my mom's life.

You could do a variation of Elizabeth that's less common, like Elise/Elysia/Elisa/Alise/Alice

I really like the suggestions of Eleanor/Lenore/Simone too :D

Yes!! It was for Margaret Atwood. My first thought pertaining to "strong feminist women" was the The Blind Assassin. I adore Margaret Atwood---your mom was a lucky duck!

The more I think about it, the more perfect Dagny sounds. Excellent, awesome choice!
