[identity profile] smack-me-silly.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

My friend recently found out she's having a girl; she already had fallen in love with the name Cirus for a boy, but now she's trying to figure out a good name for a girl...she was thinking Syris? What do you guys think?

I don't like it at all, either spelling, for either sex.

I think Cyrus is fine for a boy, but I dislike Cirus, because it looks like cirrus.

I strongly dislike Syris, especially if it's pronounced like Cyrus. Has she considered Cerise? It is pronounced seh-REESE.

I don't like chosen names for one sex, that if that preferred/chosen sex isn't there, that get carried on to the other sex.

A name for one baby is only for that one baby. Not a name that can be given to either.

Each baby is a separate person and deserves a separate name.

And. I had no idea how to say that, until someone spelt it Cyrus... lol Billy Ray anyone?

misspelling it doesn't make it more feminine.

How about Iris?

I think Syris looks stupid, and it still sounds like Cyrus...which is very masculine.

The feminine would be Cyra. I don't like Syris.

I don't really like either. I especially dislike Cirus. It makes me think of either the circus or cirrus clouds.

Cyrus would be okay on a boy, but not that spelling.

Syris is just bad ... especially since it doesn't look like it would be pronounced the way she probably wants it to be.

I think that it's time for her to find a new name.

cirus=cirrus. is cumulonimbus next? or perhaps nimbostratus?
if she's dead set on the name, i think cyrus is the only way to go, and she should hold out for a boy.

Why? :(

Cyrus is a great name. Spell it right, and it's a great boy's name. But the ones she's come up with are just... not great.

Cyrus is nice for a boy, but I would worry about the Billy Rae factor. Silas might be a good alternative.

What about Cherie, Sydney, Shiloh or Cassidy for a girl?

I've had students named Saira and Zaira, both with the ai pronounced "eye," at least that's how I said it. Both students were Mexican so with their accent it sounded slightly different.

How about she waits and uses Cyrus when she has a boy?

Misspelt.

I like it, though; even though it does have a slight boyish edge. But, if it's between that and Cyrus, I would choose the spelling above.

Is it meant to be pronounced like Cyrus or like Cirrus?
