Hey guys!

I'm Victoria (yet 21 years old) from Germany and I really LOVE names (although I'm neither a mom, nor pregnant, nor do I have a husband/fiancé/boyfriend with whom I'm planning to get...)! :-) I'm studying English Language and Literature and I'm in my 4th semester now (out of 9).

Anyways, I thought I'd just introduce myself to you briefly and then go on by posting my Top 5 favourite girls- and boys names here. *g* The (hit-) list is the following (in order of likability):


GIRLS:

1. Sorsha (SOR-sha)
2. Ivy
3. Alakina (ah-la-KEE-na)
4. Adela (ah-DEH-la)
5. Idina/Mabel (ee-DEE-na)


BOYS:

1. Asa (AY-sa)
2. Liam

for girls i like ivy, and theres something about sorsha thats making me kind of like it, also.

i love asa and liam, and ethan is nice too.

the only ones i really think are just atrocious are ingvar and anakin (skywalker - that kid would be teased relentlessly, come on)

Let me just note that I would never name my son Anakin (at least not as a first name)! Of course I'm aware of that Star Wars hype and I have to say that I'm really sad that this runied that beautiful name! I love it nevertheless. And Ingvar (Scandinavian name, meaning: "he who is the foremost warrior") I think is a lovely name, too! I kinda like Nordic names and Ingvar is definitely my favourite one! :-)

But glad you like Asa and Sorsha! Awesome! It's so hard to find people who like Sorsha! But I LOVE Sorsha! *g*

...thanks?! Well, as I said above I would never consider naming my future son Anakin, I just like the name! And I don't like Star Wars either. Glad you like Liam, but concerning the other names: they don't suck! At least I don't think so. If you think so you could just be a little more polite saying so.
If I really hated a name that you really liked I'd also not come over and say: "Omg, this name sucks!" Maybe I'd say: "I'm sorry, this one 's not my style at all." or "I really don't like this one, but that's just my personal taste." But to tell someone that the names he really loves do 'suck' to me is close to personal insult. Maybe that's just me who feels like that, I don't know...!

Great you like Asa, too! I really adore that name! It's just SO beautiful! Short, yet not plain at all. :-) Ivy and Liam are also great of course! :-)

You might get a lot of "...ew" responses, because the majority of people in this community are American, and except for Liam, Ethan, and Ivy, none of those names are used hardly at all in the US, so they tend to smack of faux-ethnicity. But ignoring that, since for all I know these names are all the rage in Europe...

I do like the sound of Sorsha. Ivy and Mabel I've never been fond of. Alakina has a nice sound, but at first sight makes me not want to try to pronounce - just overload, or something. I like Adela and Idina.

Asa just sounds like a girl's name to me, probably because of the vowels. I've always liked Liam and Ethan, and I like Ignvar, but Phileas... eh. And even if it weren't for the Star Wars connection, I wouldn't like Anakin, I don't think.

Heehee, that's okay of course. I really don't expect everybody to response well on the names I like. I'd just whish for some more politeness. Furthermore, I'm glad that there are not too many people who like the same names I like, for that's I think what makes them unique and I love unique names! :-)

Anyway, again: glad you like Sorsha. I really love that name! Same to Ingvar! *lol* Concerning Asa, well... written Åsa it IS actually a girls name, but I'm fully aware of that and I don't think that it sounds all too feminine. Yeah, Alakina really is long, but to me not overload at all. And Phileas and Anakin... well, it's just my personal taste. I can emagine people pretty well not liking those names. ;-)

I really like Ivy. I like Sorsha, too, even though it makes me think of the wicked queen's daughter from Willow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096446/). Still a neat sounding name, though.

As for boys, I absolutely adore Ethan, and I like Liam. Not to fond of the rest, though I suspect it's more cultural than anything else. ;)

A while ago I post my list fo favorite Czech names here and they pretty much all got bad responses as well :/ People just dont like European names I guess

Adela for some reason just poped the song "Dude Looks Like A Lady" into my head. I think the guitar sound at the begining seems so say "Adela."

Yay, someone from Germany! I have a question for you. I have the name "Mareike" on my list because of a pen pal in Germany I had over ten years ago (lol)...I've loved it ever since. But I can't find anything about it online except that it's a "pet" form of Marie or something like that? What do you know about it? Is it more of a nickname? If so, for what? I really want to use it but I don't want it to be ridiculous for her lol.

You'll laugh, but that's exactely where I got that name from! Sorsha, the red-headed warrior princess, daughter of evil queen Bavmorda. *g* I love that movie and I love the name! Joan Whalley is great as Sorsha and I think her character is a positive one because she fortunately turns out to be one of the good ones at the end and helps Willow and Madmartigan to fight her evil mother. To me she's, besides Willow and Madmartigan, the third hero (or in this case heroine) of the movie and I fell in love with her name ever since I saw Ron Howard's "Willow" for the very first time when I was 14 or 15. :-)

But Ivy, Ethan and Liam are great, too of course! ;-)

It really seems like people from English-speaking countries don't like most European names. That's okay with me, I can live with that since I'm not offended by that. And there are lots of names that I don't like either, so...! ;-)

Gee, I have to admit that I don't know that song. I actually know the name Adela from García Lorca's "La Casa de Bernarda Alba" ("Bernarda Alba's House") where one of the daughters of Bernarda Alba is called Adela. But yeah, I love that name too, of course! ;-) Cool that it also appears in a song!

It's really no shame that you haven't seen any of the Star Wars movies. ;-) I have seen Episode I, II and III, but this had no impact on my opinion on that name at all, so...! :-P I also love the sound of it. As I said before, I think it's really sad that whoever hears the name automatically thinks of "Star Wars". It's such a beautiful and well-sounding one! :-/

I'm really surprised by you saying that people in the US have a problem pronouncing Asa correctly. I wasn't aware of that at all! AY-sa or AH-sa should be obvious, shouldn't they? I wonder what they'd make of it...! *g* ASS-a probably? Or ass-A? Omg, the poor name! xD
