What's the feeling on the name Elsa? We'd probably use the nn Elsie a lot too.

Is this a name soon to follow Ava, Ella, Emma up the charts? And if you don't like it, that's cool, but could you please state why? Thanks!

I think its a cute name, but yes I think its going to turn out like Ava, Ella, and Emma in terms of popularity. Its very similar to those. I personally would never use it because of that reason alone.

I think it's a sweet name :)
Hmm not sure, does kinda fit the trend but still should think it will be uncommon for a good while.

I don't really like the sound of Elsa, to me it sounds a bit mean or snobbish, but I like the name Elsie...or Elise.

It's cute, but doesn't seem like it would catch on to me. I would feel safe about it! At least your kiddo will be ahead of the curve.

I don't like it b/c it sounds like a cow or cat name for some reason.

Hmmm. Mixed feelings.

On the one hand, I picture Ilsa from Casablanca - beautiful, classy, elegant, mysterious...

On the other hand, I picture a huge, scary, hairy, mean, masculine woman with a deep voice :/ Run! Elsa's here, she's mad and she's got her rolling pin!!!

So, either classic Hollywood, or harsh and manly (like those other Germanic names like Mechthild or Adelheid). If it wasn't for Ingrid Bergman I think I'd hate it.

I don't like it at all. This name reminds me of Ursula, the evil octopus in The Little Mermaid. I don't know...Elsa and Ursula sound very similar to me even though they have different first letters and syllables...they contain the same letters/sounds I guess.

I do agree with ewaeva in that it has a more harsh, Germanic feel to it than Ava, Emma, etc. I think that will probably be what keeps it away from the top names- the Germanic feel to names has been in decline since I believe the 1920-30s.

I think Elise is a similar, but more likely candidate. It's a bit softer, more girly I think than Elsa. Elsa also reminds me of a cow for some reason.

Right now that's my favorite name, with Elsie as a nick name (because of my Great Grandmother). I think it will become more popular because it is similar to Ella and because I've noticed it appearing on more people's lists of favorite names.

I've never really liked that name, mostly because the first Elsa I ever knew was a very overweight (26 lbs) cat at a no kill animal shelter I volunteered at, and she tore at my face once. I now know a human Elsa, a very pretty, smart little girl, and I think because of that the name's growing on me. I'm still not that fond of Elsie (that still reminds me of a cow or something) but Elsa, especially paired with the right middle and/or last name, could sound really nice.

My old lady neighbour is named Elsie... that would be my reason aganist it.

I personally don't think it'll become the next "Ava" though.

I don't really like that name because it reminds me too much of Else (the last e pronounced like the first e) which is a really old-fashioned name here in Germany.. grannys are called Else.

Reminds me of the lioness in "Born Free". But given that nobody else here has even mentioned this, it's not likely to be an association that most people would have. (It's not a negative association regardless.)

I don't like Elsa/Elsie because it sounds very grannyish in my opinion.
I don't think it will go up the charts- whilst Emma has always been popular, Ava & Ella are new popular editions to the charts becaues they have a real beautiful charm about them. I just don't see that with Elsa.
