[identity profile] isoldereverie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
On Monday I heard one mother call out to her two kids. The girl appeared to be 6 years old and the boy was 3 or 4. The girl's name is Modesty, nicknamed Mod-ee (similar to muddy) and the boy's name is Legend. What do you guys think of these names?

It was interesting to see the kids, too. In my opinion, Modesty was not dressed modestly! She looked primped and spoiled in a V-neck shirt with capri pants and sandals that had heels!! Where can you find heels for a 6 year old? She looked there was a lot of emphasis placed on her appearance.  Legend on the other hand looked like a regular rough and tumble boy. Nothing much legendary. idk Giving the boy a puffed up name that suggests he is destined to "be somebody" while the girl has a name that suggests she is to be prim, proper, and demure seems like gender stereotyping to me.

Oh man. Those are awful. I do think Legend could be cute without the connotation that goes along with it, but it's awful when you think about the meaning. The poor kid. What if he just wants to be average? Ugh. And Modesty is a horrid name.

Legend isn't SOOOO bad, even though I still hate it.

Modesty on the other hand... I think that's probably the worst name I've ever heard.

You are SO right.

Also, Modesty sounds like a feminine hygiene product.

Modesty is pretty bad, I agree, but I think that the worst would have to be Random.

I think Modesty and Legend would be better as middle names, but I still wouldn't use them.

Whoa, the girl gets Modesty, and the boy gets Legend? They're like complete opposites. I like some virtue names, like Verity or Grace, but Modesty is stretching it too far, and Legend is just corny and ridiculous.

I hate virtue names because I have on. Hope may sound pretty, but you will not believe the number of idiots who have taunted me about my name since the age of five. You'd think that it'd taper off after becoming an adult. It hasn't.

Unless you're a Puritan, virtue names are not okay, in my opinion.

Not gender stereotyping, only stupid. It'd be gs-ing if they were, in fact, modest and legendary.

Modesty is quite possibly the most ridiculous name I've heard.

Legend doesn't surprise me much. I figured somebody would do it.
