what do you think of the name Curtis?

Personally, i wouldn't pick it for a baby, except that it's the fathers name, so when we thought we might be pregnant, i thought of it as a middle name. I didn't like it when i first met him, but it really grew on me.

what are your thoughts on naming a baby after someone whose name you don't neccessarily love but the person is important enough that you want to name the baby after them to honor them?

Eh... the only Curtis I knew was a real ass. :/

So I don't like it based on that bad connection, but I don't think I'd like it anyway. It sounds weird to me.

Personally I wouldn't use a name of someone just to honour them, if I hate the name. I'd find something similar, if possible, or just use it as a middle name that I'd never really have to use.

From what I've seen, sometimes when a baby is named after the father, they go by 'Junior' (which I think is nasty, but whatever, I'm not naming my kid after my husband, so no worries for me, lol) but yeah, Curtis has very limited nicknames. Maybe just hide it as a middle name and never ever use it, heh. :)

I've known two Curtises and both were pretty much self centered jerks so the name has negative connotations for me.

If the father is dead set on naming him Curtis you could give the child a middle name starting with a J and call the child CJ.

I only know of one Kurt (which I think was short for Kurtis). He was a Junior who went by Kurt as school and "Randy" (short for Randall, his (and his father's) middle name) at home.

As for using a name you don't like to honor some one you do...

Maybe give the kid the same initials? Or, since Curtis apparently means "courteous", look up other names that mean courteous or polite?

I don't think Curtis makes a bad middle name at all.

However, don't feel like you have to use a family name if you absolutely hate it. My grandmother's name was Doris and I just cannot bring myself to use that one.

I wouldn't use a name I didn't love.

I actually was thinking of doing something similar. I would maybe like to use the name Erin to honor one of my best friends who has passed away. But while I like the name, I don't love it, so I feel it make a nice middle name. That way, for all intents and purposes it's there, but not always in the forefront.

I am not very fond of the name, but I have a good friend named Curtis (goes by Curt), and I always have the desire to call him "curtsy" or "courtesy" (though I never have... I would say if you're going to use it, make it a middle name.

This is a hard Q for me, because I wish more than anything in the world that I LIKED my maiden name, Bennett, for a boy, because I was the last Bennett and when my dad passes away it will be gone. But I don't like it as a first name. My grandpa's name was Glenn, and I would like to name a child after him, but I don't like it. His middle name was Leo though, and I do like that as a middle name, so I've found a compromise.

Ultimately, I can't use a name I don't love, but I do have the dilemma.

I like the name. One of the most amazing people I've ever met is named Kurtis, so. I'm biased.
