So I thought I would ask you all the question I ask nearly every one of my friends and family members..

My husband's maternal grandfather was named Jack. He was a huge influence in my husband's life and he has always wanted to name our son Jack, but felt he couldn't with his last name. His last name is Hoffman.. So our son would be named Jack Hoffman. I absolutely love the name Jack, but I can understand how this name could lead to teasing and wouldn't want my child to go through that. So what do you think? Would that be irresponsible to name our child this?? I wonder if in say ten years the slang would even still exist? I'm not sure. Tell me what you think!

i think the slang will still exist. i'm pretty sure it's old, so it probably won't go away so soon.

I love the name Jack but yeah, I think they'd definitely fall prey to teasing. Maybe they'd embrace it as a teen, going through puberty, but I'm sure as they matured it'd become annoying.

We were thinking Jacob as an alternative.But I really don't care for it. We have 12 family members on my side and six on his with J names, too.

I think the slang will still exist, but it took me a while to even get what you were talking about. I was like, what's the matter with it?

That being said, I'm someone who advocates use of names despite possible nicknames, because kids will tease about anything, and if he gets teased about it, he'll be stronger, get over it, and it'll get old.

I think 'irresponsible' would be a major overstatement. But then I actually read it out loud with the last name, and yeah, that's kind of bad. But Jack is such a cute name!

Use Jack as a middle name then? I think, unfortuately, that Jack gets a bad rap no matter the last name, esp during the teen years. Maybe I just grew up with the most immature boys, but one Jack got teased for it a lot from his friends, and his last name was something plain (Costello).

Maybe I have a dirtier mind than most of the posters above, but I immediately saw Jack-Off Man. Yes, all names can be teased one way or another, but this is pretty cruel. I think even with Jack as a middle name, he would get teased. A lot.

Here are some ideas: Honor this family member by picking another name that starts with J.

Use you SO's grandpa's middle or last name as a first name.

Look up the meaning of the name John/Jack and pick another name with a similar meaning to honor his grandfather.

I know my friend who is NOT named Jack has the last name of Hoff and everyone calls him Jack because of it. I gotta say though, it's not teasing. It's a nickname and he likes it.

I imagine most teenage boys would find it funny.

it took me a few minutes, but that is probably because i am not a prepubescent boy. first i thought "jack off" and then i realized its actually "jack off, man"

I think this is definitely a situation where using Jack as a middle name (if you dont like Jackson, which was suggested above) is probably the best choice. Kids are heartless.

My last name is Ballik, pronounced "Bah-lick". I still get called Ball-lick. It's the main reason I'm not giving my kid a hyphenated lastname. Ballik-LaPointe? Please...
