I'm still trying to come up with names for my future son. Anyway, I was wondering, what do you guys think of surnames as first names?

A recent (albeit trolly post) reminded me of my love for the play Dangerous Liaisons and I realized I quite like the name Valmont. So what do you think of these names as a first name:

Valmont
Cromwell

?

Also, for non surname names, here are a few I am currently in love with. WDYT about:

Archie (maybe just as is, maybe short for Archibald, or maybe for Archer?)
Jerome
Percy

What about combinations of the first names I just mentioned as first names and the surname names as middle names? Percy Valmont or Jerome Cromwell, for example?

I love the nn Val for a man. A significant number of my favorite names are surnames, so I don't see a problem with it....not to mention that it has been a tradition in many families for hundreds of years, so I don't see it as trendy.

I like Archer, but not Archibald. The latter just seems very old manish to me. Archer is great, though, and I think Archie/Arch works well as a nickname. I also sort of like Jerome, but I prefer Jeremy. Percy is not my style and reminds me too much of Harry Potter.

I like the nickname of Val, but I think Valmont and Cromwell are WAY too obvious of last names for first names. I mean, I'm not at all a fan of last names as first names, but I feel like Walker, Anderson, Harrison, etc., while trendy and also last names, can work for either. If you're set on using them, I'd say use them as a middle name.

Archer Valmont*
Archer Cromwell
Jerome Valmont
Jerome Cromwell*
Percy Valmont*
Percy Cromwell

Percy sounds VERY effeminate. It reminds me of the wimpy competition-for-the-hero characters in historical romance novels.

I don't like most surnames as given names although I think Valmont might work well as a middle name (or, in the spirit of the post that inspired you you could add some random letters and an apostrophe to it and then just claim that's how it's pronounced ...)

Percy Valmont flows well but I'm not overly keen on Percy. (Nothing wrong with it I just don't like it). Archer is the kind of name I normally hate but I actually do like it, don't think it would work with either of those two as a middle name though.

I love the name Archer (I actually pretty much love all names that end with -er). Archibald is very old manish and outdated in my opinion. My best friend and I make fun of this character of Degrassi because his name is Archibald Rupert, so yeah if two 21 year olds make fun of the name, imagine how kids would make fun of it.

Valmont and Cromwell sound very... upper crust indeed. so unless there is some connection to the same, i don't think it'd work. i strongly dislike Archie and Archibald, Archer is kind of neutral. Percy sounds very very gay to me - not that there's anything wrong with being gay. :]

Jerome is definitely my favorite here.

I like Valmont a lot, but immediately makes me think of Cruel Intentions, which was based off of Dangerous Liaisons. That being said, I dislike the other names.
