[identity profile] crazydiamondsue.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband and I aren't planning to find out the sex of our baby, so it was important to me to have names chosen for either sex pre-arrival and for both of us to be in total agreement (my dad tentatively agreed to the name my mom picked out for me and then added the feminine derivation of his name to it while my mom was passed out post-partum and it's made life irritating ever since!)

We had no problems with a boy's name, but we've spent the past 4 weeks unable to reach an agreement on a girl's name - until last night!

BOYS
Patrick Edmund
Ian Patrick
Judah Edmund
Noah Edmund
Jonah Edmund

As much as I share my husband's love of Celtic names, they don't really flow with our very Germanic last name. Though I love Judah, my Jewish ancestry is a few generations back; Noah is way to popular around here (and will always be a General Hospital name to me) so Jonah was a nice balance of classic/religious, not trendy, and different enough but not "created." Plus we both just liked it without having to explain our reasons to each other.

GIRLS
Isabella Catherine
Rory Catherine
Veronica Grace
Cordelia Violet
Cordelia Nalani
Cordelia Suzanne

Rory is really too short balance with our 4-letter surname; Isabella - though we both loved it equally of all the names - is WAY too popular; he loved Veronica, but I'm not a nickname person and I really dislike "Roni"; and Cordelia was a hard sell (I love it for "King Lear," "Anne of Green Gables" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reasons) for him.

He didn't care for Cordelia aurally (he wanted to make sure people pronounced it "COR-DE-LEE-UH" and not "COR-DEAL-YUH" - but as a Suzanne who's been called Susan more often than not, I told him to give up that dream) and he felt that people would assume it was a "Buffy" namesake and laugh. Um, most of our non-internet friends/family couldn't name the cast of Buffy if money was on the line - so I think we're safe there. Once I got him to agree, I said that he could pick the middle name - no arguments. He suggested Violet (which I love but again - the trendy thing) and Nalani. Um. Hmm. Welsh First Name plus Hawaiian Middle Name plus German Last Name? Why not throw in an Arabic third name to get that total United Nations feel? At last he suggested my name as the middle name, since a boy would have his. It's very "Gilmore Girls," but I like it. :)

So it will either be Jonah Edmund or Cordelia Suzanne. WDYT?

You know, I'm not a fan of either Edmund or Cordelia in general, but I think Jonah Edmund & Cordelia Suzanne both sound very nice.

I really like Cordelia Suzanne as a combination :) and take it from someone who is no fan of either name alone!

My favorite among your boys' choices would definitely be Ian Patrick :)

Jonah makes me think of the whale...I'm sorry!! Most bibical names make me think of 80 year old patriarchs though. I lovelove the name Judah though.

Veronica can have the nn Nica too, which I think it prettier than Ronnie/Roni/etc.

I like Cordelia very much. (yay King Lear! My fave Shakesphere play). You could also pull the nn Rory out of it and use two of your names at once.

I love Cordelia Suzanne. I prefer Suzannah but that wouldn't sound as good with Cordelia. I love the nickname Delia.

I like Jonah much more than Judah. I really like Noah but you're right, it's far too popular right now. The only bad thing about Jonah is that it reminds me of Jonah Hill..the annoying piece of shit from Superbad. =P

Anyway, I think you've made great choices!

Mind if I ask what name your Dad stuck onto your birth certificate? I would be so mad if my husband did that while I was passed out! lol

Oh no, he put it as your first name? I know how frustrating that can be, both my brother and my Dad go by their middle names (Alexander and Daniel)..actually nicknames of their middle names (Sandy and Danny) because they have a family name as a first name (Robert). And it can be very confusing/frustrating at times.

Cordelia Suzanne is lovely, and won't be too common but won't be so uncommon it's mispronounced. In general I really don't care for Jonah, but Jonah Edmund flows well.
