It used to remind me of either a witch or a cat (with the nn Tabby). Now, our neighbors have the cutest toddler named Tabitha and It's grown on me a little. The name fits her, and it's not too popular.
Since my name is Samantha and I used to watch Bewitched I always sort of toyed with the thought of naming my daughter Tabitha. The other kids the same age as her probably wouldn't make the connection anyhow.
As someone already said, I picture a cat. I don't really have much against this name, but I'm not overly fond of the sound.
What about something a little similar - Talitha? It's very unusual, but legit. Means "little girl." It comes from the gospel of Mark - "Talitha cumi", Aramaic for "rise, little girl" when Jesus heals a child thought dead.
Of course, not a name to consider if you are not fond of the Christian reference! But I thought I'd mention it. I had a friend named that and everyone loved her name. She pronounced it Ta-LEE-tha, stressed on the second syllable.
That show is before my time, I didn't even realize that was a character's name! I don't know why else it would sound witchy to me, though.. stupid TV putting associations in my head and not informing me ;-)
I think you're right, kids don't have the same name associations we do, each generation has their own. The name Zoe, for example, sounds trendy to us, but to kids it's a muppet.. like naming a kid Elmo.
It's my orange tabby's name. We alos have a cat named Athena, so we normally call Tabitha "Tabithena" off habit. I dont think I'd consider it for my daughter, but if it floats your boat, go for it! It's a gorgeous name! With something like "Lily" or "Maya" as a middle name, it would be great.
I freaking love the name Talitha but no one else in my family - including my husband - does :[ I love T names. So to the OP - Tabitha gets a thumbs up.
Tabitha is very cute. Bewitched should have been before my time, but i was ill most of my teen years & so home, on the sofa/in bed...i grew up on daytime tv which incleded early morning reruns of bewitched! I dont like the nn tabby, but the full name is lovely.
