so i was hanging out in biology, drawing an involved doodle of the dream-sequence in goethe's faust, and thought... what about the name ariel--for a boy? any suggestions for middle names?  (pronounced like aerial, not ari-elle)

That's the way I always pronounce it when spelled Ariel. I don't pronounce it ari-elle unless it's spelled Arielle.

I dunno. It seems like one of those names, now that you mention it, that could be either/or-but-rare-for-boys. I think it'd work better on a boy as a middle name, and preferably when paired with something solidly masculine. John Ariel, maybe, or Joseph Ariel.

Ariel is one of my top girl names, so I really cannot see it on a boy (though I know it's technically a unisex name).

I think I would go with something very masculine as a middle name...Ariel Thomas, Ariel Jonathan...I also liked the Joseph suggestion. Ariel Joseph sounds good, too.

I *love* Ariel on a boy.

Ariel Alexander comes straight to mind, or Ariel Garrett.

Ever heard of israeli politician Ariel Sharon? ;)

It could be unisex, but Im fairly sure it's a male's name in Israel.
He goes by Arik.

I do think it's pronounced as Arielle in Israel, but I pronounce it like you do.

Ariel is a Hebrew name predominantly used for boys (though it isn't pronounced aerial in Hebrew). I like it, though I've only known one male named that. As far as the little mermaid thing, my redheaded sister is also named Ariel and she was born not long before the movie came out. She never suffered much teasing over it.

Ariel... sounds incredibly feminine not matter what. I like the name Ari for a boy a lot, though.

I really like it for a girl and reeeeaaally hate it for a boy.

And I don't think the Little Mermaid association will ever go away.

My first reaction was immediately that I can't imagine it on a boy in North America ... but I actually kind of like it. For some reason, I like it *written down* for a boy better than I can imagine actually saying it ... does that make sense?

I don't like it for a boy or a girl. All the boys I know named Ariel pronounce it like AH-ree-el, not aerial.

It's a boy's name in Israel. It's pronounced like AH-ree-el or ah-ree-EL. The girl version is Ariella.
