I always think of Peyton Manning, so therefore I never fail to cringe when I hear the name on a girl. It's a good name, but I would never use it because of the fame and increasing popularity that's attached to it.

Its not my style at all, wayyy too masculine on a girl and too trendy sounding on a boy.

i'm not a fan at all. i don't think it sounds right on a boy or a girl to be honest.

I don't like it. It's too trendy, and doesn't sound right on either gender.

its just too redneck for me honestly. if i had never heard of it before, i would probably like it - but it has negative connotations.

I hate this name... I don't like the sound at all. For a girl it sounds too harsh for a boy it sounds too gay (for lack of better word, nothing wrong with gay) and in general it just sounds pretentious.

It reminds me of the character on One Tree Hill...who is a girl

I like the name and see it as a male name.. but I have many friends who are peyton/payton/peyten/paytin people... so perhaps I just like my friends and thus like the name.

I like it for a girl, but I wouldn't use it because it's too trendy. I hate it on boys. I also hate it spelled Payton.

Too trendy, too cutesy. It's a bad name, in my opinion.

This name will ALWAYS remind me of Peyton Sawyer from One Tree Hill (a girl). I think it seems funny on a boy. Either way I don't like it though.

I hate it. It's too masculine for a girl, unfortunately also too popular on girls to work for a boy, and it's too trendy for either. Plus, Peyton Manning? Eww.

I hate how people will dismiss a name because of its popularity. I on the other hand LOVE this name. I have no bad attachments to it, It's beautiful, and I think it works well on either sex. But if I were to use it, It'd be on a girl. =]

I come from a football lovin' family so Peyton Manning is the first thing I think of too.

Yeah...being popular or trendy does not matter to me at all. If I love a name, I love it for the actual name...how many kids or other people share it is not a factor.

And i agree I think that Peyton works for both gender but for me, its my favorite girls name!

I hate this name, but because it is an awful name, IMO, not because it is popular

I love it, both on girls as well as boys. Peyton Manning is my favorite football player as well, but I don't like the name because of him. I like Peighton as an alternative spelling on girls. I think it's a beautiful name that isn't too masculine or too feminine. There aren't many good nicknames for it, though. :(

I'd like it on either.
It's my little cousin's name [girl].

It sounds like a stuck-up girl's name. Plus, it sounds like "pay-ton"

i can't really see anything good about this name. i wouldn't like it even if it wasn't nauseatingly trendy.

I *really* don't like this name. It's marginally better on a boy than a girl, but I don't like it for either gender. The fact that it is so overused right now just makes it a million times worse every time I see it.

It sounds like it should be a last name to me. Too many first names sound like last names anymore.

I like the name Peyton, but prefer it for a girl. It just sounds more feminine to me.

I wouldn't use it because of Peyton Manning. My boyfriend would shoot me. Lol.

I don't think it's a good male name at all, but it's okay for girls. Way too popular and trendy for me.

I like it a lot, but prefer it on girls. I only like the spelling Peyton though.

I think Peyton's one of those names that's not really trailer trashy. I'd associate it with the upper middle class, personally. The sort of upper middle class person who would like to come off as rich and maybe names their kids Peyton and Grayson.

From: [identity profile] eleanorgrace.livejournal.com
I have no statistics to back this up, but I suspect that, like most popular names, this name is no longer in vogue with the upper middle class and higher classes. I read an article not long ago which posited that names start out "classy" sounding but are then picked up by the mainstream and lose their higher-class connotations.

I don't know any rich people naming babies right now, so I can't even offer anecdotal evidence, but I'm going to choose to believe this theory anyway.

I love the name and I prefer it one girls. Especially if it's spelled Peyton. Spelled Payton it looks more masculine to me but that's only because my little nephew is named Paisley Übi Payton.

It sounds like a dog's name to me. I guess that's because my friend named her puppy "Peyton Manning".

AGREED. "Trendy amongst a certain set" sounds gentler than "The kind of name you'd find on a girl raised with the highest ambition to be on Homecoming Court, not in the Supreme Court" - even if the latter is more to the point.
