What do you think of Mireille (meer-AYE)?

J'aime la prononciation française, but I REALLY don't like how most people in the US would say it. It just doesn't sound right without the French /R/. :( I love most French names, but I could never use them here because they just sound so wrong pronounced in English!

I wouldn't know how to say it if I saw it which is never a plus.

I definitely wouldn't ever pronounce it correctly. It looks like Mir-e-isle to me, and even though I can see that it's not right, I keep wanting to say it like that.

I like it a lot, but could never use it because of a high school in-joke that continues to make me laugh years later.

it's an ok name but i do think it's likely to be butchered by those unfamiliar with french. i also automatically think of mega-cheesy mireille mathieu but that's probably cultural, hah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-akthLWRPS0

i think it's very pretty, but really confusing for people who don't speak french/know how to pronounce it

Well, pronounced like that I'm not really fond of it, although I know that's just how a french name should be pronounced :p

I think it's because I knew this girl in high school whose name was Mireilla and she wanted it to be pronounced Mee-RELL-la. I somehow like that better, probably because I'm used to it by now ;)

I have a cousin named Mireille, and she and I never got along... I never cared much for her... so I associate that name with her, and I don't like it :/

Love it. LOVE. However, according to French pronounciation, it would be Mir-AAAAAAY (rhymes with Hear-SAY). Like, Marseilles, which is Mar-SAY, not Mar-SIGH.

I don't think the R is too big an issue. I'm a french-speaking American but I have no trouble with it when I saw it with a Southern accent. It just sounds like Meer-eh?
