I prefer Catherine for a first name and Katherine for a middle name. Don't really know why, I just think it looks better that way.

Because of "Kate/Katie"

I like it better with a K ... that was how my grandmother spelled, so I got used to that spelling first. I used to *really* dislike it with a C, but I'm okay with it now.

I'm mother to a Catherine, and I don't think of either as "best", as they're both VEEEEERY long-standing, traditional spellings. It's a fantastic name spelled either way.

We picked C because there are a lot of K-names in my husband's family that are similar (Kathleen, Katie, Kathryn) and we didn't want to fall into too much of a pattern- that's really the only reason. Now that we have it, I'm sort of biased towards C, I think it looks a bit more elegant, but I honestly don't think either is "better".

I really like them both, so I guess it would depend on which nickname you'd like to use (ie. Kate, Kit, Kay, Ketty as opposed to Cathy, Catie, Cat).

I think Katherine leaves more option for nicknames.

Then apart from that, I have synesthesia so C's are yellow and sweet and K's are purple and rebel, so if I had to decide I'd take it from there and ponder which personality I'd rather attach to the name.

I agree that Catherine looks more elegant.

just kidding. I like them both equally, I can't see why one or the other would not be good.

Katherine, because I like Kate better than Cate.

But my prefered spelling of this name is actually Kathryn. (And I am not a "replace all the vowels with y's" kinda girl! But with this name, it seems lovely, not trendy or tacky.)

I prefer Catherine. The K looks more my-generation to me, and the C looks more "classic" I guess. But I love the name either way.

Me too. =)

Plus that's how my best friend spells her name and my little cousin is Katie. It just seems more normal to me.

Catherine is my favorite cousin's middle name and my great grandmother's first name.

Katherine, like my Aunt who goes by Kathy. I also like Kate as a NN.

Cathy looks funny to me for some reason and Cate is just strange.
I think Catherine as a middle name is nice though, since there is no need for a NN in that case.

I don't see any problem with calling a Catherine "Katie".

I like the look of Catherine better, but I dislike that it lends itself better to the nickname Cathy than Cate. Katherine, in my opinion, is better for nicknames like Kate. Kathy works too, but I'm not a fan of Cathy / Kathy in general.

I do like the look of Cate or Catie, but I feel like there will be a lot of misspellings.

I used to love the spelling Kathryn, but now it looks childish. I dislike Katharine.

Follow up on my last comment:

I also think Catherine is more classic.

I knew twins named Jacqueline and Katherine (Jacky and Kathy) and they seemed more modern than the sibset I knew named Catherine and Anna, which seemed more classic. I love the sibling names Catherine and Anna. I think they go great together.

I prefer Katherine as I'm a Kate and C's look wrong. I also had a friend called Kathryn, so I prefer that spelling over all others!

As I'm a Katherine, I very partial to Katherine. I don't really have anything against Catherine, though. It depends on how it looks with the last name, too. Kathryn, I hate. It's dated and awful looking to me.

Funny, I'm a Katherine Elizabeth. I was called Anna Elizabeth and Anna Katherine for about seven months of my mother's pregnancy. They changed their minds about two weeks before I was born. And my mother refused to let anyone call me Kathy, as she hated it.

Hmmm...I don't think Kathryn looks dated. I think it looks nice with the Y. Not sure it's my favorite Katherine spelling, but it is much better than Katharine, or Cathryn, imo.

well, I'd rather go with Catie in that case, otherwise people can assume you're Katherine while you're Catherine.

Weirdly, Catherine is on my short list of names, but I prefer the spelling Katherine.

(I'd be spelling it that way because of St. Catherine, though I suppose I could get away with using an alternate spelling. It's not like I'm a devout Catholic, I just think she was a badass.)

I prefer Catherine because it looks more old-fashioned, classy, and "correct" to me. And also because my cursive C's look nicer than my K's.

I just like the way it looks. The trendy thing to do nowadays is change C's to K's in names (Caitlin, Caleb, Christopher, etc.), so even though Katherine is technically correct, and it's not 'trendy' or anything, I guess I always shy away from K names. Plus, Catherine seems to be less likely to be shortened. Every Katherine I know goes by Katie (even if they don't want to), but the Catherines I know are generally Catherine unless they specify. And I hate the nickname 'Katie' (I love Cate/Kate, though).

I used to like Katherine more, but now I'm fond of Catherine because of Wuthering Heights.

I like Kathryn. That's my aunt's name and how I thought it was always spelled. She goes by Kathy, though.

Catherine is my name, I have always liked it better than with a K but everyone who ever tries to spell it uses a K so I think K is more popular

One of my best friends is Catherine called Katie. Never been a problem for her (or hadn't been yet when I asked, a few years ago).

I have synesthesia, too, but my C is red/coral and my K is beige/yellow... and pretty much opposite "personality" feels!

I prefer the C, but then I generally prefer C to K.

My name is Catherine! I go by Cathy.

Catherine with a C looks more feminine and sort of romantic than Katherine with a K, which reminds of sharp, sassy-tongued Katharine Hepburn. Plus Cathy reminds me of Cathy Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights, while Kathy looks like a truck-stop waitress and screams 1950s. Kathy-Sue.

Kate can also easily by a nickname for Catherine, though. Catherine Bennett in Pride and Prejudice goes by Kitty, and that's with a K.

I chose Katherine because it's more similar to Katharine, which is actually my prefer spelling. I feel like Katharine gives it a more glamorous feeling, as in Hepburn.

However, I think Catherine's more timeless and elegant.

I'm torn. I think I like Katherine better, but my grandma's middle name is Catherine, and I want to use that as a middle name after her, but I don't know which one I'd use.
