Baby names obsession
Jan. 30th, 2008 03:54 pmWere you ever obsessed with baby names as a child? I was very obsessed when I was ten years old and that obsession lasted for a few years. I used to have a small baby names pamphlet that was found in the house and I liked looking at it. I later used to like going to the library and looking at name books there. I had a penchant for unusual names and didn't want a nice unusual one to pass me by. I had lists of them in my diaries.
In high school that obsession went down a bit. I still made my lists but I wasn't always looking them up.
Now I still like names, yet I am not always looking them up. I looked back at some of those names I wrote down and I would never use many of them. They were either too ridiculous, ethnic that I couldn't use, or became too trendy.

Date: 2008-01-30 09:21 pm (UTC)i worry sometimes though that i'm getting "strong maternal urges" confused with wanting to name things and buy them socks.
tbh my favorite name that i don't think will ever leave my head is elliott, but for a girl. everyone says it's too masculine though (honestly i think i'm a little warped because soft E names ALWAYS sound feminine to me) so i've pretty much decided not to use it. i don't want teachers assuming my daughter is a boy when they're looking at the name sheet on the first day of class, really. so i think i'll use it on a boy anyway.
i was also obsessed with jordan and adrienne when i was younger. that's passed.

Date: 2008-01-30 09:35 pm (UTC)I wrote down every name I heard and liked just to look them up in the library later.
I wanted to name my child Amabile (pn Ah mah bee lay) when I was 10.
My cousins sing in a choir called Amabile and I really liked the name. Now it just sounds ridiculous.

Date: 2008-01-30 10:14 pm (UTC)Yeah, I wrote down names like Kalanit, Clarabelle, Zizi, etc.
I really liked Leeann for a girl, then I met a LIane in high school who hated her name and was often known as "Lane".
Maybe I should go work at an orphanage somewhere and use up lots of names I like!

Then around 12 or 13 I was obsessed with the idea of having twins and naming them:
Joel Darren and Jose Warren

Date: 2008-01-31 02:19 pm (UTC)In middle school, I was a movie fanatic and I remember that I was always interested in matching up character names with the actors that played them to see what kind of combinations I'd get. I think the first one I thought about was The Secret Garden. Mary Lennox played by Kate Maberly: Mary Kate (boring). Colin Craven played by Heydon Prowse: Colin Heydon (doesn't quite work). Dickon was played by Andrew Knott: Dickon Andrew (ugh).
Once I started taking foreign language classes in middle school, I started taking my favorite name combinations and seeing what the Spanish variation or the French variation would be. I remember doing that a lot while I was bored in class.
Shortly after high school, I moved in with my boyfriend, who had lots of old books sitting around, one of them being an old baby name book. I started studying it and that's when I really, really got into names. Been a big nerd about it ever since.
