[identity profile] bohemianvegan.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Were you ever obsessed with baby names as a child? I was very obsessed when I was ten years old and that obsession lasted for a few years. I used to have a small baby names pamphlet that was found in the house and I liked looking at it. I later used to like going to the library and looking at name books there. I had a penchant for unusual names and didn't want a nice unusual one to pass me by. I had lists of them in my diaries.
In high school that obsession went down a bit. I still made my lists but I wasn't always looking them up.
Now I still like names, yet I am not always looking them up. I looked back at some of those names I wrote down and I would never use many of them. They were either too ridiculous, ethnic that I couldn't use, or became too trendy.

i've always loved names. i'm nineteen now and i think i'm pretty much set on planning to have children (provided i'm in an appropriate and promising relationship) when i'm about 27 and i'm seriously just playing a waiting game.

i worry sometimes though that i'm getting "strong maternal urges" confused with wanting to name things and buy them socks.

tbh my favorite name that i don't think will ever leave my head is elliott, but for a girl. everyone says it's too masculine though (honestly i think i'm a little warped because soft E names ALWAYS sound feminine to me) so i've pretty much decided not to use it. i don't want teachers assuming my daughter is a boy when they're looking at the name sheet on the first day of class, really. so i think i'll use it on a boy anyway.

i was also obsessed with jordan and adrienne when i was younger. that's passed.

I was very obsessed. From beginning to end you're story matches mine.
I wrote down every name I heard and liked just to look them up in the library later.

I wanted to name my child Amabile (pn Ah mah bee lay) when I was 10.
My cousins sing in a choir called Amabile and I really liked the name. Now it just sounds ridiculous.

I posted a list earlier that I made in middle school.

Names have always been a thing for me. I just really like names.

I think I've always been obsessed with names.. when I was 12, though, is when I started writing down a list that I still have, the exact piece of paper, to this day...

my taste has changed a bit, but is overall.. similar, to what it always was.

I've been obsessed since seven years old, when I got a basic baby name book at the dollar store, lol. The collection and fascination built from there.

When I was a kid like maybe 5 or 6 I became obsessed with changing my name I had a list of names;

Nancy
Deva
Samantha

Then around 12 or 13 I was obsessed with the idea of having twins and naming them:

Joel Darren and Jose Warren

YES. My dad would always bring me back something from his business trips to LA when I was little, and I remember asking for a specific baby name book when I was 8.

ME TOO! I'm 19 as well and I know I want to wait about 10 years before I have kids, but I'm still really looking forward to it.

I was obsessed from a young age. I'm 23 now, and I know it must have started when I was 10-12 at the latest because I still have lists from that period. I've pretty much had a steady interest since then.

I was also really into Greek and Roman mythology when I was a kid, and I remember paying a lot of attention to the names I found in those books.

I was around seven when I first bought a journal with a lock on the front (it's blue and green) and started writing down awesome names. I'm 21, and my mother still has that journal at her house. It's full. It's the journal that I jotted down all different spellings of names, especially for my own and my best friends. We hated being one of a bunch of Sarah's and Kate's in class (Mind, I'm legally a Katherine, but hated my name until about two years ago.) I picked Kayt instead of Kate. I kind of like it because it's mine and it's different, but would never ever do it to a child. It's a huge pain in the ass.

But anywho, I now keep spreadsheets with names I like. I make a new tab about once a month to make a distinction in my naming tastes and its evolution.

I was definitely not interested on the level that I am now, but when I was little, I remember that on the first of each month, I would rearrange my stuffed animals and rename them alphabetically (first one Anna, second one Ben, etc).

In middle school, I was a movie fanatic and I remember that I was always interested in matching up character names with the actors that played them to see what kind of combinations I'd get. I think the first one I thought about was The Secret Garden. Mary Lennox played by Kate Maberly: Mary Kate (boring). Colin Craven played by Heydon Prowse: Colin Heydon (doesn't quite work). Dickon was played by Andrew Knott: Dickon Andrew (ugh).

Once I started taking foreign language classes in middle school, I started taking my favorite name combinations and seeing what the Spanish variation or the French variation would be. I remember doing that a lot while I was bored in class.

Shortly after high school, I moved in with my boyfriend, who had lots of old books sitting around, one of them being an old baby name book. I started studying it and that's when I really, really got into names. Been a big nerd about it ever since.

Haha, what? I've always thought Elliott was fine for a girl.

Definitely.

Amazingly enough, I still like a lot of them. Adohi, Shoshana, Tovah, etcetera.

i remember really liking names when i was younger...I would always discuss with my mom what my future kids would be named. I remember I wanted a boy named Zachary Taylor and a girl named Zoe Kate! i think i even wanted them to be twins!! I would never use those now. But i think as i got older i got even more obsessed with names. i can't stop! i loove baby names books and i love the nymbler site (www.nymbler.com) where you write names you like and it finds names for you of a similar style.. I've also become more and more obsessed with knowing what celebrities name their babies, and with the Jolie-Pitt family haha! its like im getting OCD with names! I was at a family reunion a while ago and i met all these cousins i never knew and they brought their babies and i just had to know what each baby's name was!! hahah

Heh. I'm also 19 and want to have children at 27. I also worry that I really just want to shop for someone other than myself, and I'm very much looking forward to naming my children.

And I think Elliot is a great name for a girl, I actually don't like it for a boy.

i definitely prefer it on a girl, but my whole family makes fun of me for it. i think it's very feminine sounding. but i love the name regardless so if i have to use it on a boy, so be it.

Oh yeah, I've always been obsessed with naming things. I don't even want kids. I just like naming stuff. :) Part of it is because I like to write, so I enjoy coming up with character names.
