Date: 2008-01-29 11:30 pm (UTC)HATE A LOT: Aiden, Blaze, Jax, Jayden --- All way too trendy and annoying to me. Do you want him to be in a class with 4-5 other Aidens or Jaydens.
Some suggestions from Nymbler:
Tristan (A little less trendy but similar sounding)
Adrian (same thing)
Kieran
Rowan
Keenan
Brennen
Gavin
Elias
Julian
Mattias
Jordan
Logan
Nathan

Date: 2008-01-29 11:31 pm (UTC)Aiden and any names rhyming with it are NOT unique. Do your child a favor and don't name him any of those names.
From your list, I like Evan, Joel, Kole (but with a C), Matthew, Nicholas, Oliver, and Robbie as a nickname for Robert.
I think Oliver Cole sounds especially lovely.

Date: 2008-01-29 11:39 pm (UTC)I also like Ethan, Evan, Oliver and Tobias. Nicholas, Joel, Riley and Matthew are ok. I'm not crazy about Aiden, Jayden etc for reasons already given.
Jax is OTT and will sound ridiculous on anyone over 30. Ditto with Blaze. Blaine makes me think of David Blaine. How about Blake? It's similar but I prefer it.
Robbie is fine as a nickname for Robert, but on its own it's not great. I went to school with a guy who went by Robbie for years, but in his late teens he got really sick of it because he thought it was childish and started going by Rob. I think it'd be good to have that option, and everyone would assume he was Robert anyway...

Date: 2008-01-30 12:00 am (UTC)I'd try to stay away from the trendy names because they're going to sound really dated in the next few years. So even though you might love Aiden, Jayden, Jax, and Blaze, they're not names that are going to grow up well with your son, and they're probably going to be one of about 58758589595 in their classes - especially Aiden and Jayden. Jax and Blaze are less popular, but neither strikes me as a really great name.
I love Joel, Matthew, Nicholas, Oliver, Shane, Tobias, and Ethan. Evan, Blaine, Riley, Trey, and Owen are all okay, but they definitely wouldn't be my first choice. The others are great names, not too popular but not too obscure, and they're cute on kids while being grown-up enough for adults.
As for Kole, I LOVE the name Cole, but Kole looks like a trendier version (like you were trying to be different, but didn't quite make it) and everyone will end up spelling it Cole anyway. If you want to use it, I'd recommend using Nicholas as the given name and calling him Cole. I've heard that done a lot, and I think it gives him a lot more options as he gets older. Cole is rather nickname-y and he might feel like he's more of a sophisticated-Nicholas type of guy. And he might like Nick or Nico better. So that might be a better option.
If it were me, I'd go with Nicholas, Joel, Tobias, or Oliver as the first name. If you're really set on using something more obscure or trendy like Aiden, Blaze, Xavier, Jax, etc. I'd use them as a middle name. That way he can avoid the comments and the criticism that might go along with them, but if he really does enjoy having a more 'out there' name when he's older (although Aiden, at #1, isn't really 'out there'), he can make the decision to go by that, but it isn't forced upon him.
My favorite combos, out of these names, are:
Joel Ethan
Joel Aiden
Joel Tobias
Nicholas Owen
Nicholas Xavier
Nicholas Joel
Oliver Matthew
Oliver Nicholas
Oliver Tobias
Tobias Joel
Tobias Oliver
Tobias Matthew
All of these names are classic without being horribly popular or overused, and they all provide the ability to grow up with the name. All of them work well on children, teenagers, and adults, and aren't going to cause your son any embarrassment, spelling or pronunciation disasters, etc. I know that people will say that "A child could hate the name no matter what you name them," but I think taking the time to consider the options and choosing one that has all of those things going for it is a great start. They at least won't be picked on or anything with these names, and it's unlikely to cause them horrible stress at any point in their life (unlike naming a child Mergatroid or something).
I don't know if I said this the way I wanted to, but: you have some really really really great names on your list. I know the appeal of names like Aiden, etc. because they are kind of 'cool' in their own way (and I actually do like Aiden, but not the others like it), but unless you have this feeling that you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO name your son that, I'd avoid them if at all possible.

Date: 2008-01-30 12:04 am (UTC)If you want something unique, Tobias or Joel is probably your best bet. Neither is horribly obscure, but they're unlikely to be repeated in your child's class at all. Tobias is #484 on the SSA's list and Joel is #124, so they're not even close to the same league as Aiden or Jayden or Owen or any of the others.
