Serj or Sergei

For some reason I'd never thought of this name before but it makes me really happy both because Serj Tankian (system of a down) has been my favorite singer since I was 12 and because we once had a waiter at the olive garden named Sergei who made me really happy when I was depressed. (he was really sweet and gave us a bajillian Andes mints)

So here:

I'll say Serj simply because whenever I hear Sergei I instantly think 'Sir Gay' lol...

Side note: System of a Down is amazing & so are Andes mints @ Olive Garden!

I like Sergei better, and Serj as a nickname. But I think it seems weird when people use names from cultures that aren't even close to being their own, so I wouldn't use either if they don't somehow fit into your family's heritage, or unless you're from the countries where these names are widely used. I mean, names like John and Noah and Adrien are one thing, because they're 'universal' to an extent, but the ones that are obviously a specific culture or region seem weird when the people using them aren't at all whatever culture/religion the name is from.

the world is becoming a melting pot and I'm multiracial and my best friend is and half the people I've encountered are. cultural lines are really blurry these days so I say, if you like it. USE IT.

I have this same problem. I really love Serj Tankian and the name Serj in general. I just can never decide if I'd rather use Sergei and have Serj as a nickname or just us Serj on its own. I never thought I'd see this same post. Crazy.

Sergej is common Russian name and Serj is shortened version for it. So I'd say it really doesn't matter as long as you are OK with the first comment ("jenniferdunn" about "Sir Gay").

For the most part I agree, and I don't think it's necessarily a "don't do this!" thing if you like the name. I just think it's weird to see a little Irish boy with red hair named Giovanni O'Donnell. It just seems weird for some reason. I mean, there are some names that are universal, but I think it's kind of weird to use names that are so specific to a certain culture unless it's your culture. And Sergei is definitely an example of that.

I've posted in this community before...so I don't know why it never occurred to me that I could ask opinions here. I could've stopped pondering it long ago. Ah well...it has officially been asked.

Oh, and yes, Neville is amazing. That was definitely one of my top five favorite Harry Potter moments.
