Two children with interesting names today. A 5-year-old girl named Lourdes, which of course makes me think of Madonna, and I'm not sure how I feel about the name, but she was cute enough to carry it off. The other was a boy, maybe 8, named Adam Etheridge {Lastname}-- he apparently goes by Ridge. I'm guessing maybe he's a junior? I can't think of any other reason to pass up a perfectly fine name like Adam. I think Ridge is a bit soap opera-y, but it's miles better than calling him Etheridge. If he is a junior, they've probably chosen the best of their options.

My brother's friend just had a baby girl named Kaitlin Marie. She joins big brothers Erik Joshua and James William.

These are some names my boyfriend and I are thinking about for future babies (I'm not even pregnant...we just like to plan ahead :D).

For a girl:

Indianna (Anna for short) Elizabeth Jane
&
Isobel Elizabeth Jane

For a boy:

Corbin/Corben (Ben for short) Jozef Gilmour
&
Oliver Jozef Gilmour

(Elizabeth, Jane, and Jozef are family names)

Apparently, now that the Fifa World Cup is taking place in South Africa, parents are naming their babies things like Fifa and Soccer City!

In certain communities of South Africa, the naming of children is an extremely important process, marking a child’s character based on the circumstances of his or her birth. Unlike Western cultures, where children often take on the name of a favorite aunt or grandparent, South African names are often descriptive of qualities to be aspired to.

Suppose that for some reason (witness protection program, you want to start over, you hate your birth name, whatever) you had to change your entire name to something completely new. We name babies in here all the time-- what would you do if you had a chance to name yourself?

My real first name is Marcella. I think I would call myself Eleanor, if I had to change my name. It's been one of my favorite names since I was tiny. I used to name all my best dolls Eleanor.

My real middle name is my grandmother's maiden name. If I had to change my name I'd probably pick another family name so I could keep some ties to my family. I have a favorite great-aunt named Amelia, which I think goes well with Eleanor.

My new last name would be Irish, just like my current last name, but other than that I'm not sure what I'd choose. I'd probably ransack the upper branches of the family tree for good last names. Sullivan? Murphy? Brady? Recognizably Irish, but also easy to say and spell-- that's what I'd look for.
