Ellis

I've always wanted to have the nickname for one of my daughters be Elle. So for a long time I thought I'd name her Ellis and call her Elle for short. Then I switched to liking Eleanor for the long version. But now I'm kind of back to Ellis... What does everyone think of it? Does it seem like a fake name? I feel like Eleanor might be more meaningful so I'm not really sure which one to choose now.

Ellis seems really masculine to me.

It is definitely not a fake name, though I had a student who was Ellis and *his* father was Ellis, too. Not sure if it is a unisex name or not, but Elle is really pretty. :)

Hmm...what about Iliana? Or Eliana? That could have the nickname Elle, I think. :)

I don't really like it. It's too much like a last name and I don't think it's a serious enough name for an adult. I do like Elle, but as a nickname for something a little more classic, like Eleanor or Ellen.

Just throwing out suggestions - my favorite names that could be 'Elle' are Eliora and Elinoa.

Ellis isn't a fake name, but it's a boy's name. Elle is a really nice nickname, and I think there are a lot of names it could be used for...

Eleanor
Elizabeth
Eliza
Elena
Elise
Ellen
Eloise
Elaine

Or even names that end in 'elle', like Noelle, Estelle, Isabelle, Giselle, Mirabelle.

same to me. But Elle is very feminine (let's not forget it means 'she' in french) so it compensates :)
I love Elle, it's the nickname I gave to my friend Elena!

I definitely prefer Eleanor over Ellis. Ellis seems pretty masculine to me, too, though I think certain girls would be able to pull it off.

Behindthename lists tons of names related to Ellen, so I'm going by that...

Elaine
Elea
Eleanor
Eleanora
Ellen
Elena
Elene
Eleni
Helen

I prefer Eleanor to Ellis, but if you really love Ellis, there's nothing wrong with it.

I knew a girl named Ellis who went by Ellie because she was annoyed with her name. It's not bad though, IMO, as far as the whole "last names as first names" thing goes. It's better than others in that genre.

I love the (suf)(pre)fix "Elle" in every form. Ellis sounds like it belongs on a boy more than a girl, but it works all the same. Love it. =)

I like Elona and Elena. You could also do Helen, Ellen, Helena, Helene, Celine, Melissa, Melinda, Belinda, Kelly, Shelly, Delilha, Rachelle, Michelle, Danielle, Annabelle, Mirabelle, Delta, Della and so on. I know many of these names are "dated" but I was on a role.

Also, I know a really great woman named Ellis. I love the name Eleanor, but there are a lot of them out there. Not so many Ellis'.

In England I've known quite a few girls with Ellis as their first name. The only guys I know with it are those for whom it is their surname. Hope that helps. Personally, I like it. It's different from the more common Eleanor or Eloise.

Seems like too much a last name to me, but then, lots of former "last names" are now being used as first names, so...

Personally, I'm a big fan of Eleanor.
