I love the name Apnea. I know it's the sleeping breath thing, but it's also Greek for "no wind." My boyfriend hates it. Thoughts?

*EDIT*: I'm not naming a baby. I don't have a baby.

I'm not crazy about it by any means, sorry. :/

Nah, don't like it at all. Apart from the fact it is a snoring disorder, I don't like how it looks or sounds. Sorry :(

Nope. Maybe you could take the "nea" part of it and find/make a new name including that piece, possibly even beginning with an "A." That has the potential to be pretty.

People with Sleep Apnea are usually overweight and snore.

Don't do it. Just don't do it.

Nice suggestions. Or what about Cambria? It's not Greek like the ones Dionysia listed, but it has the same A sound in the first syllable and the -ia sound at the end.

What would happen if you changed the p to an n and it was Annea?

..Please, no. I think that's terrible for a name. However, I think you might have something with the Greek names. I usually like the more known ones. Athena is a favorite. I'm not sure if Aleatha is greek or not, but it's also very pretty.

Aletheia. (Also Alethea, I think.) It means truth in Greek.

Well...most people are going to associate this word with "sleep apnea". So, I wouldn't suggest naming your child this.

That would remind me of a Gwendolyn Brooks poem. Which is cool, if you like the Anniad.

And sister Alexia! More popular as a name, but also a neurological disorder!

Apnea would be a good name for a dog because "no wind" sounds like you're hoping he won't have gas issues and doggie farts stink.

I know it's the sleeping breath thing, but it's also Greek for "no wind."

"also"? my guess would be there's a direct relation.

Hate it because, well, sleep apnea. It's got a great sound, but no way in hell could I get past the association.

If it weren't a disease it would be great. Unfortunately it is obviously a well-known condition and therefore someone with that name would be problems being taken seriously. I wouldn't name a baby Apnea any more than I would name a baby Anorexia. I'm sure, however, that there are many other similar sounding greek names.. Athena for one.. I hope you can find something similar that isn't also a disorder ;P

And it can be lethal, as a friend of some of my LJ friends died from it two weeks ago. He was only in his late 20s or early 30s (but yes, overweight).

But wouldn't it be ironic if you named your daughter that and she died of it?

Eh, sometimes it's just hereditary. Both my father and grandfather have it, and neither of them are overweight (In fact, my dad is underweight because he has a thyroid disorder).
