Are there any names you love, but you can't use, for whatever reason?

I love the name Ptolemy. I think it's awesome, and an all around great name, and I just love the way it sounds. Unfortunately... Ptolemy.

On the plus side, little Ptolemy would definitely be the only Ptolemy in his class.

On the minus side, his name would be Ptolemy.

It would sound nice, but no one would be able to spell it, and they'd probably be like, "Was your mother smoking some kind of Egyptian crack when she named you...?"

Honestly, I love the name so much, I would be tempted to use it if I ever had a son. But unfortunately, I think it's just too weird. And that sucks.

I love Soapphi (pronounced like Sophie) but I would never use it. ("SOAPY? IS SOAPY PRESENT?")

What else ... hmm ... all the boy names I like are dreadfully common, so I won't use those either. Matt, Alex, etc ...

Avery Gray is a name I love. I'm not sure if I'd use it. It's a bit too out there.

oh I have some names I like but cant use :

seth ... most of people cant say the TH in the right way..so it would be a set, sev etc

zeke ... looks like the german word for tick : zecke ! and pronounced means it the same as victory in german : sieg !

gage ... is too similar to my lastname

elijah ... my newphew´s name is elias .. and I guess it would be too close

scout larue ... everybody is like : OMFG !

ashlee ... reminds so many people on a rich spoiled girl

geunevieve ... she would be a jenny for short O_o

lilith ... same th problem...would be a lilit here

I *love* the name Payne, but everyone always thinks of Pain. I also quite like Caoimhe and Eulalia for girls, but they are either too unusual or too hard to pronounce.

Tucker/Tuck - I love the name, but it's WAY too close to the name Huck, which I also love, and I plan to use that as a nickname for Henry so it's easier to overcome the "F---" references if he has problems with that, which I'm hoping won't be. With Tucker it's impossible to get away from the reference because the long version is just as bad as the short.

Torben Otto - Everyone is always like "...WTF?" I love it, though. But Otto is also my cousin's name, and while I doubt my family would be like "Did you name him after Otto?" I'd like to avoid the reference, since we're not that close with my dad's side of the family.

James - It's my dad's half-brother's name, and while I don't *dislike* him, he's not somebody I want my son to share a name with. Nor do I want my son's name to be shortened to Jim/Jimmy, or even worse, JAMIE. Ugh. I hate all the possible nicknames for James, lol. If I were to use it, I'd use the middle name Michael and call him J.M. if he didn't like James.

Michael - It's my absolute favorite boy's name, but it's also my brother's first name, and I'm not a fan of the nickname Mike. Plus, he'd probably be called Mikey, since my brother's name is Mike (and judging by the fact that my cousin Tim, who was named after my dad, is 24 and married with his kids of his own and everyone still calls him Timmy, I doubt it's something he'd outgrow).

Thatcher/Thatch - I love it, and it's on my list, but Thatcher rhymes with Piper, which is my favorite girl's name.

Elliot/Eleanor - I would have to pick one or the other. I used to lean toward Eleanor, but now I'm leaning more toward Elliot. I'm still trying to decide.

I did think of that, but it's one of those names that I almost love too much to use just as a middle name. But I won't be having kids for a while anyway, so maybe by the time I do, the madness will have passed. :P

Charlee - I know this is going to sound ridiculous.. but Charlie is my exs name and we're still really close. I sometimes feel like we're "soul mates" and I don't want to take the chance of getting serious with him again and ending up with a daughter with the same name. lol.. but it is still my favorite name.

Caitey - there is a "Katie" on my mom's side of the family(which we don't have anything to do with anymore) and the rest of my family thinks of her.. and well, no one likes her.

Aubrey - I love it but I'm trying my best to avoid it because of the nickname "Aubie" - which would be automatic around here and it would be connected to Aubie- the Auburn mascot(I live in Auburn) and I'm not an Auburn fan. So, Audrey wins over Aubrey.

California - "the state?"

Fallon - I adore this but mostly everyone I grew up with hates it because of this girl from around here named that.

Wedge. Yeah, I'm a Star Wars fan and I'm proud enough to admit that I had honestly considered the name. Sadly, it's just too out there. And while I think Wedgie would be a cute nickname, I'm sure he wouldn't think the same.

Vincent - one of my faaavorite boys names. But, it's also my younger cousin's name [and our family is very close, so it would just be weird], plus my close friend from college named her son that, so it's out.

Rayne - we live near a podunk town called Rayne, so nope.

I love Scandinavian names like Heidrun, Janne, Bjorn, Inge, and Jesper, but they'd be too hard to pronounce in America. Same with the Irish names I like: Eilish, Siobhan, Saoirse, and Sinead.

I think that Tallulah is just about the cutest name there is... up until about age 6. I could not imagine what having a name like that when she becomes an adult would be like.

Also, I love Pier (as in Angeli), but that probably wouldn't be accepted very well. I'm sure I'd get a lot of strange looks and, besides, the name comes from Anna Maria Pierangeli splitting her last name it two and I'm not sure if it's actually a real name, so there's that...

As for boys, Michael and Jack are fantastic but they somehow seem too plain and common for me to use.

I see a lot of Persephone here. I would actually use that for my daughter - though it would definitely be a second or third name.

Homer - after the brilliant poet. Unfortunately, when that name comes to mind, we think of a bald, yellow, donut bellied somebody.

Galahad - the pure knight of the round table. I think I was going through a phase that my friends were trying to desperately pull me out of and that was naming a son of mine "Francis Galahad" - I'm out of it.
But who knows, I'm still single and childless so it may just come. around again.

I love Eurydice (pn U-rid-D-C) but no one would know how to write or pronounce it and I don't want my daughter to go through the same thing I did.
I live in Belgium and people can't even pronounce Sloane right, let alone Eurydice.
And I really like the name Elisabeth but with Effy as a nickname but Effy is also a brand of food products here so I wont be able to use that either.
And I love Beryll and Briseis but most people just go O.o when I tell them.

Hmm. Alot of those are mythological/Shakespearean names. Funny thing, that.

Names I like, and have actually considered...but deemed to be unusable for one reason or another:

MacKenzie - I think the combination MacKenzie Rose is so beautiful, but it's soooo trendy. And frowned upon by most. *sigh*
Ismene Elektra - I've had this one nixed by so many people that I don't know if I could bring myself to use it. I want to give one of my future children at least a middle name that is Greek, because I am part Greek. And I think this name sounds so beautiful. But apparently I'm the only one...
Ofelia - I am absolutely in love with this name. However...I am not Hispanic. Maybe if I married a Hispanic guy, I would have an excuse to use the Spanish pronunciation/spelling...
Roxanne - I think a little girl called Roxy would be the cutest thing ever, and then Roxanne sounds lovely on a grown woman as well...but I just have reservations about it.

Mackenzie is a name that I love the sound of, but wouldn't use due to the surname/trend factor.

I actually once knew a girl named Ismene, pronounced 'IZ-meen', and all the kids would say, "Ismene is mean!"

Oh no! That's awful, haha. I have never heard it pronounced that way before. But the pronunciation I know is "Iz-MAY-nee". And I would probably call her Izzy for short. :o)
