[identity profile] starshine320.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi! I'm 25 weeks pregnant with baby #1 and my husband and I have already agreed on the first name Grace. We just love it! Anyway, I've always wanted to "honor' my family in a way with the middle name and none of our family names sound OK, so my husband suggested that we just use my maiden name - which I like the idea, but my maiden is SMITH. Do you think that Grace Smith is too boring?? We have a longer more different last name. Thoughts?

Is there an Elizabeth, Margaret, Elaine, etc. (Not nessesarily those names but old fashioned names in your family)? I don't think Grace Smith goes well at all, but of course that's completely your decision.

I however think a very old fashioned name would go well as a middle name with Grace.

I think it's beautiful. You can't go wrong with a name like Grace, and having a maiden name as a middle name is lovely. Plus the family connection. I give it a 10 out of 10. Love it.

Mmm, sorry I just think Smith makes an awful middle name. It's pretty boring and not pretty like Grace so it doesn't go well. :/ Maybe there's a grandmother whose first name you can use or something?

I love the idea of using a maiden name as a middle name. My best friend had her moms maiden name and her brother had their grandmothers maiden name as their middle names. I think its a great tradition. If you dont like smith try using your moms maiden name or your grandmothers maiden name. My maiden name is a long unusual polish name so I wont be using that but My moms maiden name is Flynn which I think is a beutiful name and will be usingn it as my daughters middle name.

Maybe you can honour your family name by giving her a double-barrelled surname. Grace "middle name" Smith-"your surname"
That way you can choose a beautiful middle name that will go well with Grace too. I know a lot of people that have done that & Smith seems like a name that would work well for that.

Grace is my name!
I'm not a fan of the beginning of a middle or last name starting with the same sound as the end of the first name, like in Grace Smith, but I do like using a maiden name as a middle name (which I might do some day). So as a personal preference, I'm not particularly fond of the combination, but I love the way you got it.

perhaps you can combine the family names into a unique middle name for her?

i had a friend and his parents wanted to name him after each of his grandfathers (john and norman) so they combined the names to get johman (pronounced JO-MAN) for his middle name.

I do think Grace Smith sounds a bit boring. Or you could give her two middle names, giving her a name you've picked and a family name.

I'm not against the idea of using a maiden for a middle name as such, but Smith does not make a good given name, and it also sounds very masculine.

Grace on the other hand is a beautiful feminine name. Maybe post the family names so people can give you suggestions based on them?

I think Gracie Smith would be adorable and has more of a ring to it than Grace Smith. I guess Gracie is usually more of a southern name [Faith Hill & Tim McGraw's daughter is named Gracie] but I just love it.

Or you could always keep Grace as a middle name and have a family name as the first name.

yeah--maybe use "Smith" for a boy's middle name in the future?
