Family names
Nov. 29th, 2007 10:03 amJust wondering if anyone has any 'family names' or reoccurring names.
In my family, the name is Elizabeth. I can only track its starting point to my great great grandmother of the same name who went by 'Lily'(which leads me to think she may not have been the starting point). Since then Elizabeth has been used as either a first or middle name for a female child of every sibset.
My middle name is Elizabeth and I share it with 3 cousins and a niece. I have a cousin with the first name Elizabeth and my grandmother's name was also Elizabeth. My grandmother did not give the name to my mom for whatever reason but for the generations after her it is going strong.
So, what are your family names?

Date: 2007-11-29 03:37 pm (UTC)In a separate branch of the family tree, my grandmother's sister, Doris, married a man named Joseph - they had a son named Joseph, who had a son named Joseph. Another of the eldest Joseph's sons, David, named his son Joseph.
And then Richard... in a third branch of the tree, my grandmother had a brother named Richard Ignatius, who had a son named Richard Ignatius, who had a son named Richard Ignatius. Eldest Richard also had a daughter named Mary Catherine (nn Cassie) who has a son named Richard - I'm uncertain of his middle name.

Date: 2007-11-29 04:09 pm (UTC)It's also a tradition for the Robert to have their mother's maiden name as their middle name. Like my grandpa is Robert Henderson. But my Grandparents broke the tradition with my dad because his name would have been Robert Brown Gray. =P

Date: 2007-11-29 07:43 pm (UTC)My sister in law tells me to pick an easy/short name so that the child wont have trouble learning to write it down. Did you have a problem that you remember? And did you mostly go by your nn or full name in school?
My name is Amy which is horribly short and I dream of a daughter with a long elegant name lol

Date: 2007-11-29 11:02 pm (UTC)Peter is also my fiance, and he doesn't want a "junior." If he had a more Anglicized last name I'd go with Geordie, (Jordy) which is Scots Gaelic for George, but it would sound silly with our last name and I don't like George on its own. And Dorothea Cecelia will not be happening! MAYBE Cecelia as a middle name.

Date: 2007-11-30 04:25 am (UTC)I'd love to name a daughter Mary Louise to carry on the tradition, but at the same time...I don't particularly care for either name on their own merits. So instead, I'm considering using Maeta as a middle name if I have a girl.
On my father's side, the name Jack has come up a few times. I'm not sure how much it was used in the past, since my grandfather died without giving any of us a detailed family tree (and I haven't gone through public records looking), but it was used three generations in a row, at least. My brother very much wanted to carry it on to a fourth, but he had only girls, and I don't really plan to use it.
On my husband's side, there were two Henry's in a row on his mother's side, and I think there was one a couple generations before that. Gibson is a somewhat unusual one that's come up a few times, again on his mother's side; it was the elder Henry's middle name, had been used once before that, is my husband's cousin's first name, and another cousin's baby's middle name. The only repetition I know of on his father's side is John; it's his first name and my father-in-law's middle name.

Date: 2007-11-30 06:18 pm (UTC)But, in my best friends family they pass Edwin/Edwina down. It goes back at least 6 generations, and her family broke the general tradition by naming her Erin instead of Edwina. She is supposed to pass on an 'E' name to any child, though, to continue the tradition...

Date: 2007-11-30 07:56 pm (UTC)Also, lots of Mary's in the Richard Ignatius branch of the tree - Mary Catherine, Mary Patricia, Anne Marie are all sisters who go by Cassie, Patty and Annie, respectively.
