How would you pronounce Pankrati? It's Russian and I've looked everywhere for a pronunciation but I can't seem to find one. I did find out that it means 'power' though.

Oh, and Pavel? Means lowly. Why is that name so popular? =P

Pankrati would probably be pronounced "Pahn-krahtee" (Sorry, not good at explaining pronunciations).

Pavel is the Russian form of Paul, so that could be a reason it's so popular (or it sounds nice, lol).

I could be totally off base, but if "lowly" is more like humble than base, it's not that bad. I kinda like Pavel.

When I read through Doctor Zhivago, I took a moment to look up meanings of names. Pavel Antipov (known as Pasha throughout the book) seemed to suit the meaning of his name.. I wonder if the author knew this?

Hm, random comment.

I love the name Pavel. The Ukrainian form is Pavlo, which is pronounced "Paulo".

Russian is pretty phonetic, so Pan-Krat-Ee...

Pavel/Paul means small, and was the name St. Paul took when he converted to Christianity to signify how measly he now thought he was :)

Pavel is the russian form for Paul, which comes from latin 'paulus' meaning 'small'.
So not necessarily low or humble, but also literally small :)

Pankrati = Pahn-KRAH-tee
in italian it's Pancrazio (Pahn-KRAH-tz-yo), extremely rare and old fashioned.
