Fiction Revisited
Nov. 4th, 2007 11:32 am A recent post asked about names you would NOT consider using because of pop culture references (tv, movies, books, etc...). What about names that, for you, benefit from these references? Are there any names that you love because of their use in a book, movie, etc...? What about any names that aren't "real" names that you would use because of a fictional reference?
For me, I love the name Kisten because of the Rachel Morgan books, Dresden for the Harry Dresden series, Leander from Greek Mythology, Gage from Pet Cemetary, Curran from Magic Bites, and probably a lot more if I thought about it. I also love Ender, but I don't know that I would ever really use it. For girls, I love Phedre from the Kushiel series, Antigone from Antigone, Nimue from Arthurian literature, Hero from Greek mythology.
WDYT?

Date: 2007-11-04 08:01 pm (UTC)Astrid - Because of one of my favourite books, White Oleander. She's such a strong, amazing character.
Blue - A guilty pleasure name of mine, because my favourite book is Special Topics in Calamity Physics. Again, amazing character.
Sadie & Tamsin - Because of the book 'My Summer of Love'.
Madelief - Used to be a very popular series here. The main character (Madelief) was beyond awesome.
Peyton - Mainly because of Claire Forlani in CSI:NY.
Francis - Because of the character in the Secret History.
David - Because David Lynch is my hero.

Esme - To Esme with love and squalor
Gaia - Greek mythology
Harper - Harper Lee
Iris - Mythology, and the song.
Meredith - Greys anatomy*
George - Greys anatomy*
Finn - Mythology
Harrison, Jude, Lennon - Beatles
Seamus - Harry Potter (I'm not into the series. So just mean in the sense people will be more likely to say/spell it right.)
I'm slightly embarassed to admit, but that's the majority of my list.
My favourite TV show as a kid had characters with colour names; so have ended up thinking Magenta, Indigo and Scarlet are cool names. Would never use them though, because most people who knows me IRL would get the reference and the kid would probably need theraphy.
*I liked it anyway, but hearing it on the show reminded me how good it was.

Date: 2007-11-05 06:11 pm (UTC)I would SO give one of my kids, boy or girl, the middle name Chandler. It seems to work for both. But I'd never use it as a first name, and certainly not Muriel ;)
