[identity profile] kimber-leigh.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

One of the hospitals in my town has a billboard with a scrolling led of all the names of the babies for the month.. I always enjoy reading them as I drive by.. (and have been known on occasion to stop in the parking lot and just read them all..)  There are always several unique names but yesterday I noticed one that was unique enough to share..

Camara

Now, I'm not sure if they are pronouncing it like Camaro with an "a" at the end (kuh-MARE-uh)
or if it is actually pronounced ilke Camera (KAM-er-uh)..   or maybe similar to Kimora (kam-ARE-uh)..

wdyt?

At first glance, I pronounce it like Tamara with a 'c'. But when I thought about it, I was like 'wait...is that 'camera'? I tried to look it up, but nothing came out of it...*curious*

I'd pronounce it cah-MAHR-ah. I like it.

But yeah, the spelling does make it look too close to camera.

I guess it's either like Tamara with a C or Cah-MAH-ra.
Either way, it pretty much sucks :P

camara is actually a name of west african origin...i'm not sure what country specifically, but i'm thinking perhaps ivory coast? it is actually pretty common name that i've heard a few times. a name isn't 'unique' just because it isn't part of one specific culture.

Ugh, weird. I would probably say it like Tamara with a C. But who really knows.

I knew a Camara in high school and she pronounced it kam-er-uh.
And as a side note my niece's name is Kimora and we pronounce it kee-more-uh.
