I don't really consider many names to be cowboy names. I don't really get the association with Austin, but it might be because I consider Austin (the city) "crazy." I have a completely different association with the city that counteracts the cowboy thoughts. I have also only known one person named Austin, and he was not cowboyish at all. Most of the names I've read on lists (http://www.alternativebabynames.com/index.php?goto=cowboy) that are cowboy names, I think so differently of.
Which, I do live in southeast Texas, and these names are generally pretty popular where I live. Maybe we're all cowboys and I've never noticed.
The only name I can think of that sticks out as cowboyish is Wayne, but I think that's the association with John Wayne that does it.
