OK, My baby naming guru goddesses,

I come to you, yet again, with another name in hand. This time my husband proposed it... and for the first time, I don't absolutely hate his suggestion (har).

Let me get your feedback on Isla.

As in:

middlename suggestions
trends, popularity, growth
and all around general opinions

Thanks!!!

I like it pronounced EYE-lah, but not pronounced EES-lah.
I believe there are a few people in this community who absolutely adore it, but overall I don't believe it's popular or trendy.
Suggestions:
Isla Mae
Isla Elyse
Isla Sophie
Isla Joanne
Isla Roseanne
Isla Felice (Fay-LEES)
Isla Romée (Ro-MAY)
Isla Danique (Dah-neek)
=)

Yeah me too, and I think most people will =) Babynamesworld.com says it's Eye-lah, too!

I think it sounds like a much trendier and cutesy version of Isabel. I dislike Isabel due to popularity (although I like the name, otherwise), but Isla seems even more trendy to me, and it's a name that I would have a hard time picturing on an adult, I think. It might be less popular than Isabel, but I've heard it (and similar names) quite a bit from people lately and it seems like one that might spike pretty soon.

Wait, your daughter's name is Isabel? Then I'd definitely stay away from Isla. They're way too similar, I think. Unless you want the matching names, of course.

haha =P
Yea i agree with Isla sounding more exotic, but i just love how Lila sounds, though my cousin always tells me "it sounds like the name of an old women" which i don't agree with lol.

That is one of my absolutely favourite names.
I love it paired with Jean or Jane, because it just sounds so simple and elegant.

I think you should go with this name. :)

I got it from Isla Fisher, if you wanted to know, who isn't like a Britney or something, so she wouldn't be the first thing you thought of.

No! It's your baby's name, you have to be sure of it!
I am glad you're not one of those kinds of people who go, "Wow. Jaydenne, what a pritty naym! Let's name my baby that."

I'm all for surnames as first names (I have a few favourites myself) but with your first daughter named Isabel, I don't think you should name the baby (if it's a girl) such a unisex name, you know? Don't get me wrong, I don't think names should be match-y match, like Andrew and Andrea, but there should be a kind of subtle theme.

But on its own, I think it's kind of cute.

"Official" depends on whether you want to see it as Gaelic or Latinate. Isla (Latinate variety, like Spanish) is EES-la, Gaelic/Scottish is EYE-la. Both are completely legitimate, mean the same thing, spelled exactly the same, just pronounced totally differently!

In the UK, at least, EYE-la would be the standard "assumed" pronunciation, but I imagine in many more heavily Hispanic areas of the States, people would assume EES-la.
